A lot of people start out just trying to do or learn about the right things. Then all the self righteous we are special and better than anyone who does not agree with us bull gets them hooked. Church is also a means of socializing. Members are accepted and belonging to this "family" is comforting. The same reason that Nazism was able to acquire so many followers

There are MUCH worse things people can be addicted to. Seriously.

Maybe they're actually happy following their faith. Imagine that!

Mind you, they may also be part of a cult. It really depends on the individual and what church they belong to.

I try to be respectful of others beliefs, but some denominations I am against, specifically those who who are against modern medicine and withhold needed medical care from their children I do not consider these groups "Christian", they are known to most Christians as cults, no matter what they call themselves. Some of these groups are quite tight knit.

P.S. Christians do NOT "hate" gays. The Bible actually teaches to love all. Those who hate gays have their own agenda and their own problems.

You can be addicted to anything. Addiction is using something in the wrong way and being consumed by it. If someone is addicted to religion, there are far worse things they could be doing.

Sure. The idea that you have a loving father-figure watching out for you and answering prayers is a comforting thing to many people. And comfort, as we all know, is very addicting.

For other people, religion allows them an outlet for their hate and bigotry, thats also addicting, because without it, what excuse would they have to hate gays and such?

Take a look at someone who has gone thru a 12 step program, and has found god. The fervor with which they follow their new-found faith, mirrors their drug/alcohol addiction. While many won't admit it...they trade one addiction for another.
