I am looking to buy a 1989 Mustang with a 2.3L in it. I want to drive it around until I can put a 5.0 in it. Has anyone had any problems with the 2.3L engine that I should know about before I buy it? Rather it be good or bad. Also instead of the 5.0 can you put a newer engine like a 4.6L in it?

What steps do you take to upgrade the engine? Can I drop the 5.0 or 4.6 in it and then the rest or does it all have to be done together?

Don't over heat it and it should be pretty much bullet proof.

Overall, the 2.3 is a good engine but keep the oil clean. I recommend an oil change every 3500k or 2000 mi. There has been problems with the camshaft failure due to dirty oil. The 5.0 and the 4.6 will fit but you need to change the entire wiring harness under the hood and under the dash. The ecm will also have to be changed. If you buy a used one, make sure it comes from a mustang. Each ecm ( computer) is set for maximum performance and economy while controlling the emissions based on the vehicle model, weight and options.

I don't like the normal 2.3, but the 2.3 turbo is a stout engine, good for 200k because it has a hand assembled block with forged pistons and crank.

My 88 2.3 had a scored block and broken rings at 26k miles

Engine is good if up kept. With a small engine you get a light duty transmission, if its automatic
