is it okay to start off with 5lb weights for a women? trying to tone, not get bulky

This is considered lite wieght lifting. This is great for your muscles! Don't worry you won't get bulky unless if you do this for more than 15 times for more than 3 or 4 reps. This should tone your muscles within 30 days (or at least you should see results)

Well if you want to tone your body, weights wont help much. You gotta do cardiovascular excercise. The myth is that you do more reps and less weight you will tone your muscles, thats a lie. You can only determine how much muscle is built and get used to a certain motion (endurance). But it is a good idea to start with low weights and work your way up so you wont hurt yourself. However, building more muscle does help increase metabolism helping to burn more fat over all. Good luck and keep up the hard work, it will pay off.

You will not get bulky on 5lb wts.
I use 10lb wts and I don't consider myself bulky.

Of corse it is. You can do so much with them. You can jog with them, a brisk walk, crunches with the weight in the middle of your stomach. 10 pounds would be ok too if you wanted to.
