There is no home remedy.
The whole heartworms subject is a lot more complicated than most make it out to be. While one can easily prevent such condition, it can be fatal.
Sadly most vets don't volunteerly give out the facts of it, meaning all that is involved with treatment, manly because it's a money maker on their part.
Treatment facts all should know: 85% of the dogs going thru the treatment, will not survive. Those 15% who will survive, will also have permanent damage to the main organs, as in kidneys, liver, pancreas, heart, from the poison used in killing the heartworms.
Heartworms settle in the right chamber of the heart. Those killed, only can exit the heart thru the air ways.
For few years now, there's a test that can tell if a dog has males or females heartworms, or both. That's the first thing you need to know before making any decision. If your dog only have male ones, it means it has been recently infected, and only have a few of them. You'll be able to rid your dog of them without going thru the highly toxic treatment, something a vet will not tell you, as he'll lose a lot of money if you decide against the treatment (if it is the case, only males, email me directly, and I'll let you know what to do).
Heartworms reproduce very fast.
If your dog has both males and females, he's at high risk, as they'll ultimately kill him. Heartworms death is one of the most horrible ones. Your vet must first run a complete blood panel, it'll show if the dog has any main organs damage. If any of the organs are damaged, the dog will not survive the treatment. If no damage is shown, he might survived, he has a chance.
Hope all is going to be well for your dog. Let me know if you'll need any additional information.
Always keep your pets on heartworm prevention! It's a life saver!
P.S.= The 6 months shot used for the prevention of heartworms is no longer available, as it caused too many death among those who received it.

There are no home remedies for heartworm. There are some vets who will treat heartworm by giving the monthly prevention (Heartgard). If your dog is healthy enough, it will take two years of taking the prevention to be heartworm free. Some vets are switching to this method as it's less risky then using the strychnine.

There is no home remedy. You either need to start it on preventative care if it does not have heartworm or treatment from a vet if it does. You must go to a vet either way.

If your dog has tested positive, treating heart worm is a dangerous process that requires a veterinarian. If your asking about preventing heartworm that is another issue. But the preventative for Heart worm is not safe for dogs who have tested positive.

There are a few different brands of chewable preventative pills for heartworm that you can get from your vet. Most need to be given once a month. However, if your dog has hearworms they need to be treated by a vet for them, as it's a very serious condition that requires immediate attention.

The How to Herb Book by Velma J.Keith and Monteen Gordon says (page 33)
"GARLIC taken internally is one of the most effective herbs for killing and expelling parasites."
According to Herbal Antibiotics: Natural Alternatives for Treating Drug-Resistant Bacteria by Stephen Harrod Buhner, "This is the most powerful herb for the treatment of antibiotic-reisistant disease...No other herb comes close to the multiple system actions of garlic, its antibiotic acitvity, and its immune-potentiating power."
I did recently read a post that said, "Garlic can be toxic [to dogs]in very large quantities. Give no more than 1/2 to 1 raw, crushed clove per 20 pounds of body weight." But I do not know if this is valid. You can do your own research, but I have seen more positive information regarding this subject than negative.
Give garlic to your dog a couple of times per day until the problem is solved. You may can get him to swallow a garlic tablet. Or you could pierce a garlic capsule and squeeze it into his mouth or onto his food. You may also do the same with homemade garlic infused olive oil. After the heartworms have been treated, you might give him one peeled clove of garlic every month as a preventive.
Garlic Infused Olive Oil
1 bottle olive oil
3-4 cloves garlic, peeled and quartered
Drop garlic slices into olive oil and close tightly. Let bottle sit in a dark place for 2-3 days. Strain out all of the garlic and store the bottle at room temperature. You can refrigerate it, but it will solidify. Just set it on the counter and it will begin to return to its liquid state.
OR-To make it quicker. You can bake the garlic in oil in the oven and it will only take an hour. It will probably smell better, too.
1 ½ cup garlic cloves
2 ½ cups extra virgin olive oil
Pre-heat oven to 350°F. Add whole, peeled garlic cloves to casserole dish and immerse in olive oil. Bake uncovered for 45 minutes or until garlic is golden in color and oil is bubbling. Remove from oven and allow to cool. Gently scoop out the roasted garlic cloves. Strain oil into a separate container.
(You can eat the garlic cloves-spread them on toast.)

there isn't one, heartworm treatment is a long ongoing process that costs alot of cash and time consumption. there may be a low cost animal health care unit near your town, if not and you can't afford treatment, do your pet a favor and turn him over to the aspca, if you really love him you know that giving him a second chance is what really matters, theres no cost to so this and they will give him the medical treatment that he needs, and next time if you decide to get another dog...give him the 6 month shot, it's inexpensive and it works great!! prevention is the only way....

There isn't one. If your dog is going to survive heartworm, it needs veterinary treatment.
