When you get through the Sky 'please don't cancel' stuff, they should cancel your subscription and then your Skycard will revert back to being able to get the free channels. You should not have to change the card at all if it's a 'yellow house' card.
In fact, you don't need a card at all the get the BBC and ITV channels.

You can still use your digi box if you say to Sky that you want Free Sat. However you will not get all the same free channels that are on Freeview. ie no E4.

Yeah. I've just done the same recently. Rang Sky and cancelled. I didn't realize i was paying like £22 a month (£264 a year)... and we hardly ever watch anything but the terrestial channels and a few freeview ones.

Be prepared though.... I expected they would put us through a careful process to try and get us to change our mind and they did. We stood firm.... wanted to cancel... they offered us reduced package at £15.... no thanks.... a new updated skybox (ours is ancient).... no thanks.... then we were put on hold for 2 minutes... switched to another representative... who asked us same question of why we wanted to cancel... but we stood firm.... cause simply we don't hardly ever watch the premium channels.

They were pleasant throughtout... but obviously don't want to lose any paying subscribers. After that it was fine, and they said its 30 days notice from that day until our contract ends.

I replaced mine with an ebay bargain but I had to call sky to get the viewing card matched to the serial number of the new box and the new box was password pin protected preventing me ordering box office etc. Sky also re-set that to my old password. All fairly easy really.

When they cut you off you may find that your card will continue to work for the freeview channels. If not ring sky and ask them for a freeview card. It will cost £20 and is a one off payment. Cheaper than buying a freeview box.
