Songs made for English sound best in English.
I don't know if I'm right , but any song translated to a second language sound not me nice. I've heard songs of the Beatles sung in french and they sound in bad taste.
Charles Aznavour's La Boheme sounds best in French
Dschingis Kahn's Moskau does it in German.
In short, any song always has to be performed in its original version

Well many people in the world speak English and yeah, some words in other languages are much much longer than the English translation lol.

English for popular music and most other forms. Italian if you want to sing opera (but I read the question to indicate that you aren't planning to go that way).

I think French sounds very nice in music. It has soft tone and words.
