(-: I think it's from somebody who obviously didn't lose everything.

OK, it's true that a great loss can free you to take a new direction in life. I have a friend who was recently in a car crash, and now she's decided to embrace a car-less way of life. And, I was worried for her at first, but there are many advantages to it.

Sometimes people are so caught up in taking care of their image and all the stuff that props up that image that they don't look for new things to try. When they lose all the stuff, they have to take a close look and decide, "Well, is this image really me?" And if they decide to take a new path, well, they can start all over again from scratch.

That's the theory, anyway. But I think it's pretty tough to actually lose everything. I mean, there are almost always things left: money, friends, some possessions. If you've lost everything, you didn't have that much to begin with.

If you start at zero. (ie No liabilities. No assets.) There is nothing to guide you to any particular direction. Any attachment to a posession, a person, an ideal causes you to go in a particular metaphorical road. If you have nothing you're free to choose any path.

Go and watch/read Fight Club and bask in the glory that is Tyler Durden.

It means: if you have nothing, then you have nothing to lose.

But this is a simplified way of thinking, because even if you have nothing, you still have your life so there still something you can lose.
