Component is the best choice. Component supports progressive scan and Enhanced Definition (EDTV- 480p) and High Definition (HDTV- 720p, 1080i) S-video will give you a decent picture but it will not be HD, the best it can display is Standard Definition (SDTV- 480i)

I believe a S Video does support progressive Scan. component is the higher quality. However if you have HDMI that is currently the best out there and the easiest to hook up (one cable for audio and Video).

It's not just the cable that's different; the TV set's component circuits are designed to handle the wide bandwidth of HDTV signals, while the s-video circuits are designed for the limited bandwidth of the old analog-derived video. This means that there will be less deterioration of the picture when component signals are used even for "low-def" TV.

Component cables will be MUCH better that S-Video cables. Actually HDMI cables will be the best picture of all. If you do not have HDMI as an option, go with Component cables.

s-video is just a better composite cable
and only supports standard definition
you should use component to connect your dvd player to your tv
that way you can take advantage of the hd 720p resolution that most dvds have today

HDMI/DVI > VGA> Component Video > S-Video > Composite Video > Coaxial
HDMI, VGA, and component video support progressive scan, S-video, composite video, and coaxial do not.
