After the dentist digging around for 30 minutes and a few xrays trying to show him where it was, he gave up. So now the root in still in my mouth, he said it will eventually work its way out itself.
How long until the root dies ? Anyone know ? It's still pretty painful.
He said it could be up to two years before the root worked its way out, surely I wont have pain that long, yikes!

Sometimes a root tip just has to remain in place. If it is indeed a TIP, meaning that it's only 2-3 m, it's no big deal. The bone will heal over it and it might remain in place forever. If the "tip" is more like half the root, though, the socket will never heal properly and the thing has to be removed by an oral surgeon.

You didn't say how many days ago this was, but if there was half an hour of digging involved, I'd expect it to be painful for a few days, even if the root tip was not left behind.

Tooth Extraction Broken Root

I would go to a different dentist and get a second opinion especially since it's painful. That fortunately didn't happen to me when getting my wisdom teeth extracted (got two impacted ones out under general anesthesia and the other two without anything that were not impacted), but I have had a least a few root canals where the endodontist (dentist who specializes in root canal therapy) gets rid of the nerve (after administering lidocaine/novacaine) by using small dental push-pins and scrapes (not at all as bad as it sounds :) the nerve out. I'm not sure if another dentist would recommend that, but please do find out if anything else can be done.

Didn't he put something in there to kill the root? I think they have something that will do that. Doesn't sound like a good dentist should have sent you to an oral surgeon. Had similar experience with wisdom tooth extraction and I have to get 3 more out.

Hi! Just to let you know the root will not work its way out at all. If the root has broken under the gum line I would urge you to take some positive action fairly soon, and probably at another surgery. Some dentists leave roots in place if they are above the gumline & if there is not going to be a problem and they have smoothed the tooth over. Goodluck

omg!! are you serious? I have to get all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled out. Those are both horrible experiences. Now I'm scared. Nothing hurts me more than a toothache I don't think I could be able to deal with that.
