Legally she can't until you are 18. If you work, then you should pay her something.

If you have a job, I don't see anything wrong in paying rent. Look at it this way, you either pay her or move out. If you move out, you will have more than the rent to worry about. You will have utility payments, grocery payments and let's not get into the price of furniture. Give your mom some rent. Nothing comes cheap.

I think every state is different. Your best bet is to call legal aid and ask if it is. If it isn't then ask what measures you can take if she refuses to stop charging you rent. You may have to move out or be emancipated to get away from the rent issue. Being as this is your mom she can make your life a living hell if you tell her that legally she can't make you so you won't. Good luck and I hope your mom isn't just being a money grubber.

I think that your mom is doing the right thing, making you pay rent. There are certain responsibilities in life that you need to know how to handle, this is your mother's job to teach you these things. It'll make you more independent when your ready to move out. It'll make you more successful in life because you'll understand the basic skill of paying a bill.Besides why would you not want to help your mother out?

of course she can. As soon as you are bringing in money you need to contribute to the household expenses. I began paying $40 a week at the age of 16

Are you out of school and working? If so, it is her moral obligation to make you pay rent, to make sure you are responsible, self-sufficient, and appreciative of all that's been done for you.
