You can find information on your credit report at a credit bureau. It is better to contact all 3 of them. Make sure to check your credit report because up to 70% of Americans have errors in their credit reports. Inform the credit bureau about the mistake. The decision will be made in not more that 30 days. If your credit report is correct it will remain unchanged for 7 years (information on bankruptcy is kept for 10 years). There is no LEGAL way you can 'clear out' your CORRECT credit report. Anyway, the best way to have a good credit report is to pay off your bills on time!

DO NOT USE freecreditreport.com !! DO NOT !!
The site will allow you to get your credit report for free, sure, but in the fine fine print you have to enroll in a program that will cost you money later, a lot.
New laws allow you to obtain a real free copy of your credit report, atleast in my state it does. Check the laws in yours.
But, if you want to save that research time, just apply for a credit card, go try to buy a new car, something you think you will be refused for. By national law the people that refused you must send you a letter stating why. On that letter will be the names and addresses of the 3 credit reporting companies, and the procedure telling you how to obtain a copy of your credit report.
Once you get that report and there if there IS something negative on it , you will need to find that company / person and make arrangments to settle that debt.
And applying for a credit card does not lower your credit score, it shows up as an inquiry of your credit, which does not affect your scoring. Any company can see it as just an inquiry.

What do you mean clear it? You can contest incorrect information and they may remove it. But if you have applied for 20 credit cards in the past year, they won't leave your credit report for up to 2 years. Anytime someone does a credit check on you for a loan, credit card, whatever, it lowers your credit score.
