We have just adopted an 8 week old rottweiler/akita puppy (against my discretion), and she is very protective, as both breeds have a reputation to be. Where I live, it would be nice to have a dog who is watchful of us, but I do not want her to be too aggressive (also a trait of both breeds.) We have a beagle/jack russel mix, and she is not at all protective.. she loves anyone and everyone who looks in her direction. But they wrestle around and the puppy is VERY aggressive. I know that Akitas have an animal aggressive temperament. How can I train her to be protective, but not SCARY? I don't want her to be the type of dog we have to put away if we have guests. And I don't want to worry that she will outgrow the other dog and be a danger to her or my cats. However, I do like that she barks when someone comes to the door, or growls when someone unfamiliar approaches me. I just don't know how to train her not to cross the line. Is this just out of my league??

I`ve bread and trained many Rotts and as the breed goes, you do not need to train them to be gaurd dogs. They are very possesive by nature and will protect you and your family without hesitation or prodding. They are wonderful family dogs and most are very social. If you will always remember to treat them as you would a child, praise for good and scold for negative actions, you shold have no problems with your pet. They are naturally agressive towards threatening actions, so use caution around strangers. Enjoy your rott pup and good luck. Rotts also require lots of love and attention.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://bitly.im/aL381
A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

You do not want to train her as a guard dog, because this would bring out the worst in both breeds. However, a watchdog would be non-agressive and alert you when something is not normal around you. Interact her socially with people, but keep a fine line when others enter your home. The actual watchdog will come normal with the breeds. Do not allow her to be overly aggressive not even when interacting with the other dog.

I have a half lab and I am sure she would defend me if that case ever arose. She is gentle but not sure how she would do if a preditor came across her path. She loves to chase birds and squirrels and noticed when i come into the drive with my car she runs to clear a path for me. As in no birds .. etc in my drive. So you tell me ..? Does she have a thing for me.? Or is she just being a dog.

You should enlist the help of a professional trainer. It can get pricey but, it sounds like you need to start very early. Make sure your trainer has a good reputation and is experienced with both rotties and akitas. good luck.

i have a rotti too and he is the best dog iv'e ever had he is very obidient, well teaching her how to protect the family, that she will do on her own, they are very smart dogs, whatever you do don't race her without children touching her cuz then in the future she could attack a child let her get familliar with children and the people she is going to be with the rest will run its course. good luck!
