Vesalius is often given credit as being the first to dissect human corpses in front of students. He probably wasn't the first, but in many places it was illegal, so the dissectionists practiced in secret.

Galen, a Greek physician teaching in the Roman Empire in the second century made many important observations, some of which were incorrect, and were unchallenged for many centuries. Vesalius was one of the first to point out Galen's errors.
