I highly suggest Siena! It is a little over an hour from Florence. We took the train from Rome to Siena and it was very easy. I also took the bus from Siena to Florence and back multiple times, also very easy! We stayed at Casa di Antonella. It's a very small bed and breakfast owned by a weird little (but sweet) lady. It has 5 rooms and she serves a large breakfast (uncommon in italy, usually you get a croissant and that's it!) in the morning and then leaves for the rest of the day! There's a kitchen you can use as well. It is also ideally located near the center of the city within walking distance of the piazza del campo, the heart of the city where almost everything happens. I loved the location, the breakfast, and that she was gone the rest of the day and you had the place to yourself. Siena really was such an amazing place, I highly recommend it!
