I've looked at several online lists for packing to go to a college dorm. But I don't know how how those compare with moving to an apartment. Are the same items essential (except for the study materials which are not needed) or would a person need something different entirely?

Not expecting gifts of any kind. Never heard of that.

Besides the kitchen stuff and linens, I would recommend a bed, sofa, dining table. Get the rest as you need it. You'll discover for yourself what you'll need. Are you expecting gifts? Perhaps you can ask for gift cards to use as you go along.

You would be surprised how little you actually "need" to get by in a new apartment. It depends very much on your budget, how much comfort you need to get by, and what you like.

The very, very basics:

1. Something to sleep on. Even a sleeping bag will work at first, if you don't have health problems.
2. Something to cook with/eat off of. I'd go for one 8-inch frying pan and a one quart pot, with a spoon and a pancake flipper (spatula). Have a couple of dishes, a couple of bowls a couple of glasses and enough silverware for one day. Buy the rest as needed. Think carefully: your tastes will change, and you will be able to afford better stuff one day, so keep it as simple as possible.
3. Something to sit on. Bean bag or a second-hand chair works.
4. Something to eat off of/work off of. A card table will work in a pinch.
5. Napkins (paper or cloth). Two changes of bedding. Two towels. Two washclothes. Two kitchen towels. Two dishrags.

This sounds very, very spartan, but since this is your first apartment, there's a good chance you will move or get a better job or any number of things. You can always buy more later, but it's VERY hard to get rid of something after you've bought it. So, get used to your new place and see what it cries out for. Tableclothes, fancy bedspreads, travel posters, all sorts of cheap tricks can perk it up. If you keep it simple, you can afford to buy really nice stuff! (-: Then call it your zen look! Good luck!

I've answered the same question a couple times before:) I alway suggest a tool kit for the FIRST thing on the list:) Just simple things like screw drivers, hammer, a measuring tape, pliers, picture wire, wire cutters, assorted sized nails & screws& wall anchors. You'll be surprised how often you'll need these when you have your "own" place~for hanging curtains and pictures and things. Also, Duct tape always comes in handy for something;) A flashlight. Super glue. A needle & some thread, safety pins. I put all of these things together when my daughter got her first apartment, and she STILL mentions how often they come in handy! You can go to one of the "Everything costs $1.00 store" and get all of it in one stop!! LOL Best of Luck on your new home:)

Basic applicances, if they don't come with it, furniture, not unless it's furnished...pots, pans, flatware, dishes, washcloths, dish towels, bath towels, wash cloths, lamps, sheets, blankets..the list can be endless, make a check list of the rooms you have..and just start making a list...alarms, clocks all the basics that you will need to live....all the extras come in time...throw a apartment warming party to get what you need or want!!!
