Those cop movies where the cops dab cocaine on the tip of their tongues to see if it's real coke or not, I heard that they don't do that in real life. Is that true, if so, how do they tell if it's coke or not?

I'm sure the method of detection depends entirely on the situation. Cocaine has a distinctly bitter taste that cant be mistaken for any other white powder, so I'm guessing that if the scenerio calls for a quick check to see if the "perp" is actually holding, the taste test would be appropriate.

Also, while tasting it could be against some obscure cop rule, a little finger dab administered orally would not show up in hair, urine, or blood tests.

While lab tests are used frequently because they are more accurate and obviously 'by the book', it's easy to see why Hollywood would be in bed over the mouth-test act. Because honestly, whatever isnt 'by the book' is just cooler.

That myth is definately false. Police are trained in the academy to NOT do that. Not only are you ingesting potential drugs, but potentially it could be a form of poison that could kill you.
Police carry field drug testing kits with them and simply place a tiny amount of the substance into a container and it will turn a certain color to indicate whether you have the actual drug or not. With cocaine for example the clear substance will turn the color blue. After the field test the drugs are sent to the lab for further verification.
The motto is..dont taste drugs....ever!!

No, they don't do that in real life. They use chemicals to test it. If they dabbed all of the time they'd be ingesting drugs.

Actually, Sano, coke numbs the gums, which is what they are looking for. And of course they don't do it anymore... not since the early 70's anyway.

No they do not. They have field test kits they use to make an initial identification of the drug and then send it to a lab to make a definite ID.

They do a chemical field test on the substance and it's also confirmed by sending it to a drug lab.
