First off a "RECOVERY" means you completely wipe out EVERYTHING on your computer and it puts your computer in the same state as it was OUT OF THE BOX

You APPEAR to be asking if you can do a REINSTALL of WINDOWS..*IF* that is indeed what you're asking just do a RESTORE of Windows

Click on START
Click on ALL PROGRAMS
Click on ACCESSORIES
Click on SYSTEM TOOLS
Click on SYSTEM RESTORE

No, it will require the xp home cd unless you are upgrading, also if your dads cd is a recovery this for his computer and you have a different model then his, it will still not work because his recovery disk was designed for his model computer // if its the full XP cd and not a recovery disk then you should be able to install but the cd key provided only allows one computer to activate it

you'll hit upon the files you may make a disk on your gadget or System32 folders. some manufacturers gained't placed those files in there although. you'll merely might want to google search for your workstation style to make certain. Does your comp have a restoration partition? you need to attempt that still. solid success.
