It depends on which part of Canada you will be in.

French as a 2nd language in English schools of Canada:

Is not compulsory (required) by the provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta or the North West Territories. It is available and many students choose to take French.

Is not required by British Columbia or the Yukon, but a second language must be taken. Most choose to take French as second the required second language.

Is not compulsory (required) in Newfoundland/Labrador but many choose to take it.

Is compulsory (required) in Prince Edward Island from Grades 4-9, and available grades 10-12.

Is required in Nova Scotia from Grades 4-8.

Is required in Ontario Grades 4-9, and available Grades 10-12.

Is required in New Brunswick (an officially bilingual province) Grades 1-10, and available Grades 11-12.

Is required in Quebec Grades 1-12.

Not unless you moved to Quebec.

If it is any other province you can request this. However, they do not usually accept children at just any point of their educational career.

Some schools offer French, some do not. It depends upon supply and demand.

There are also some schools that are only French.

Contrary to popular belief you can live in Canada very nicely and never speak French.

Interestingly, in every province things MUST be bilingual, packaging and all govt businesses. However, in PQ you can be jailed .. or bombed as has happened in the past...if you have a public sign with English on it! Nor are govt services offered in English.

Just a funny lil thing to make note of.

I don't know about other parts of Canada, but in Ontario, yeah. You need to take mandatory French classes until grade 9 (age... 14/15?) Remember that in Canada, education systems are governed different from province to province. Curriculums are very different from province to province, and in Québec, the school system is VERY different. Some Gaspésie Joual-speaking redneck Quebecker explained it to me once. CONFUSING! @__@

Don't worry, even if you don't like French, your kids won't learn a thing. They'll learn more French from reading the ingredients on soda cans and candy wrappers, to be honest.

Of course, if you ARE looking for your kids to take REAL French classes, in Ontario there are 'French Immersion' schools. Mostly English speaking kids, plopped in classes where they can only speak French and their teachers only speak French as well. Scary!

No, your children would be put in an English school, unless you want to put them in French Immersion. They would have the option of taking French classes in later grades if they want to. No one is forced to learn a language. For Anglophones, their are night course given at the Community College/University or private sessions. This is all optional. The only advantage to being bilingual is a better choice of job options, especially at the Municipal, provincial and Federal levels. Hope this helps!!!!!!!!!!!

Depends on the province. Some provinces have compulsory French up to a certain age, some do not. Check the site below for a list by province.

Only the Province of Quebec has two primary languages, English and French, in any other province they would not teach French as a required course.

Not all of Canada is French-speaking but, if they did go to the French-speaking part (Quebec, I believe?) then it is quite possible, yes.
