Is there an evolutionary reason for this, or a health reason?

It's an evolutionary thing. That's how your body protects you from poison. If we didn't have people telling us what to eat, and we were walking around the woods foraging, we would need some kind of indicator that we were about to eat a poisonous substance. Like if you saw a dead moose or something. If it was old and rotten and full of listerosis you would feel sick, and that's your body telling you that moose is off limits

Ever notice how your throat closes when you drink alcohol? You literally have to force it through some kind of barrier to swallow it, because your body wont let you unknowingly poison yourself. You have to override your sense and poison yourself anyway if you're determined to get drunk.

its all in your head....like a survival technique when your body is sick from food and it expells whatever is hurting you...so when you see something that reminds you of that same sick feeling, your body will have the same reaction. If you have never vomited before and still have this reaction when seeing or smelling something "gross" then i'm just guessing when i say all humans are born with this reflex.
You know, I have met several people that feel nauseated or vomit while watching Disney's "Alice In Wonderland"

Just the good 'ole mind-body connection. Lots of us think it doesn't exist. Lots of us work ourselves into the ground and actually think we'll never get sick due to stress. The feeling like vomiting at the sight of seeing something disgusting is just another example of how our bodies and minds are intricately and intimately bound with one another.

Let me make a hypothisis for evolutionary purpose. Lets take crap for instance.

When the cave man saw the little pile of crap, he gagged a little. Then when the tyranasarus left the 400pound load of turd, he gaged a lot and knew it was time to get out of there.

ShadyCal hit a homer. It dates back to the hunter-gatherer days when, you saw something that remotely looked like food, you ate it or starved, hence no leftover cavemen. (Except in car insurance commercials.) If it stayed down, food...uuummggoood. If not ,,,puke,,,,uuummmnotgggood.

Vomiting is something that your body/mind finds unacceptable! Therefor it is dislodged. It is your body/mind protecting you.
