What is a dialect and what a language is often more a political than a linguistic question.

There is eg an "Italian" language, based mostly on Florentine, but taken to include such disparate languages as Sardinian and Rhetoromansch, simply because chance made those regions Italian.

Catalan is clearly not a dialect of Castillian, though it is another Romance language. In this case "dialecto" was used as an insult.
