What crank, bore ,and stroke combinations make each engines CID. Are there any cool tricks useing different crank and rod, piston combinations to give a 390 more CID.

Please if you have a bone-head dumb blonde answer please do not post it.
I would like to understand technical differences between each engine design. My goal is to stroke my 390 and try and find another stroke crank from another engine to do some playing around with. I am just picking other brains for information to study.

Shopteach is right, except a few details. The 428 bore/stroke given was for a 429 (a 385 series engine). The 428 bore/stroke is 4.132 x 3.98. The 427 was the largest bore of the FE engines. It was 4.232 x 3.78, using a 390 crank. As said, you can use the 428 crank in the 390 to increase displacement. The 390 block has alot of material, and can be easily bored .060 to make a 423 or just .030 to make a 416 with the 428 crank. With the availability of cheap new parts these days, and 428 parts supply becoming a little more limited, I would suggest buying a rotating assembly. You can stuff a crank as large as 4.25" stroke in a 390 pretty easily (making a 445"). This is about the best way to go with this if you're wanting to use the 390 block. The 427 parts are awfully expensive, and the 428 parts are getting harder to find. If you can find an entire 428 at a reasonable price, then I would go that route. If money is no object, a popular combination is a 454 FE using a .030 over 427 block with a 428 crank. People have been doing this one for years. Speedomotive and Keith Craft have alot of experience doing FE engines. Any FE isn't cheap to build, but is a great engine and they can be very helpful with parts, etc. They can be reached at:

Good luck. It's a great motor overlooked by alot of people these days because of the cost of parts, but it's getting better with the help of the aftermarket.

The bore and stroke on the 390 is 4.13 x 3.78 while the 428 is 4.36 x 3.59. Mods on the 390 were common back in my days. Direct fit crank from a 406 will boost your cid to a 406. You can also use a crank out of a 428 to boost a 390 to a 410. You can increase the cid by using cupped pistons as well, but you will lower your compression ratio significantly. If you need to know more about the power mills from my time, Check out the link below. It lists all engines ever made by the #1 maker. FORD.

well they also made a Boss 429 and its a Hemi Motor and it is a rare find but were in the mustang called the Boss 429, 612 were ever sold the other are bore and stroke sizes differences and there is a lot that can be done to those monster Motors and this is the main reason there are still around they are great Motors, also ford made a 428 cobra jet Interceptor motor for police get one of those and you will to do nothing but put in the fuel ,factory High Performance , not to much on the road can stay with that motor but a Ford Lightning -f150 (little known facts about the 390 in 1963 & 64 ford had a 390 over head cam motor under raps, and to this day they had had first, was never put in production but the 4.6 litre its predasesor, crown vic and newer mustangs motors ,1991 and up use this not all (5.0 V-8 came from the 289 as you go back in time ,but most crown vics, and it started in 1963 with the 390 wich is cast iorn, and the 4.6 litre modular motor is aluminum block steel sleved over head cam fuel injected motor) same with the V-10 its a 4.6 with two more cylinders

with the 390 you can do some swapping with the 352, 360,361industrial,390,391industrial and i believe the 428 can all share the cranks. the 300 series can interchange the heads and intakes rods, crank cam. like use a 361 crank (sincethere steel) and the 390 rods and pistons that will net you a good high output engine combination.. all the motors share one good thing in common, except the 427 i believe. that is they are all round bellhousing motors. the 428 there were a few differnt models of them out there. the cobra jet and super cobra jet. the 427 did make an industrial that wasn't very good since its compatibility with other none industrial 427. but dont quote me on that. its been awhile since i have messed with the 427. hope it helps.

As a mechanic I can say a few things. I have worked on a lot of cars and can say it depends on what you like. #1 some people like fords and others GM To me as a mechanic is fords are a lot harder to work on Most V8s fire in an order 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 Fords on the other hand 1-5-3-6-2-4-7-8 This by todays standards is a little screwy Most Gm cars engines turn clickwise- Ford conter clockwise I do repair fords but I dont like them.

cubic inches the higher the number the more cubic inches you have in the cylinder allowing more gas and air for stronger combustion causing a mor powerful engine. larger boer more room more cubic inch
