It depends on your particular hardware, but everything will probably wokr.

There aren't many viruses on Linux, and it is stable.

Why don't you try getting a livecd version of linux, to give it a try before you commit to installing it? Basically you burn a copy to a CD, pop it in and reboot and you're running Linux without installing anything.

The first part is hard to answer without knowing your hardware configuration. You should be fine, but there's a possibility that there might be sound or video problems. If so, there are forums at the Ubuntu site where you can get help.

Linux is a good, stable, reliable operating system that rarely crashes. I have a Linux box that hasn't been rebooted since before Christmas and is running smoothly. While there are some viruses for Linux, there are very, very few. Probably less than 1% of the viruses out there are for Linux, which makes it practically virus-free. I enjoy playing with it, but you may have a totally different experience. It sounds like at this point it wouldn't be any worse than your XP experience, so I'd say go for it. You might want to read up on it first though, since it's different from Windows.

There are no viruses for Linux. You'll find that the system rarely or never crashes. It will take some getting used to, and it may require some reading to get the network to work properly, but you'll find that overall it's a painless, reliable system.

You can try FreeSpire Linux.
It is often referred to as Linux with training wheels because it is a good place to start if you are just learning Linux.
And yes, installing Linux will detect and setup all of your devices automatically.

Have you tried to update your drivers. Go to HP Dell or whatever website the fit your computer/ You may have to goto driver.com if it custom build machine but you should be able to update if it not too old.
Ubunto Linux will be fine if you just wanting to surf the net but if you have other software that needs to be added like Yahoo Messenger it might not be for you.

Yes do get UBUNTU or XUBUNTU and dual boot it with XP. It does work with yahoo and other messenger services.

Remember to backup your data before making any changes to your computer.
