The best way to download programs for Linux is to use the packet manager that comes with your Linux distribution, especially if you have Fedora or Ubuntu, they have programs that you can download so that you don't have to do heaps of searching for them, otherwise just do a Google search.
You should have put your distribution here because there are many different Linux distributions that use different program types.
The swap partition is virtual memory, it is used like ram, for if you start to get low on ram so you can not write anything there. for a more detailed explinatoin on virtual memory go to Wikipedia, they have a great definition.
If you don't have a distribution already my preferences are Ubuntu and Fedora. (just Google them) Ubuntu is a smaller initial download, they are both good stable operating systems, my faveroute is Ubuntu.

I use Redhat's "Fedora" software. http://fedora.redhat.com/
A swap partition is a "piece" of your HD that UNIX/Linux will set aside strictly for helping your memory run programs. You don't write anything there. Windows has a "virtual" memory on the HD that kind of does the same thing.
