I'm boarding the 4am workout at my local gym in the mornings before school. I'm 16 and 6' tall. Should I eat before or after a workout? What kinds of things should I eat specifically in this kind of situation? I'll be doing some cardio and some curls.

resistance training is catabolic by nature. at the conclusion of exercise the body has a negative protein balance. protein must be consumed to increase nitrogen retention post workout. consuming protein before training reduces the catabolic effects of exercise.

the less time the body is spent in a catabolic state the more potential there is for increases in fat free mass and increased fat burning

Several hours before your workout you should try to get in some Almonds,instant oatmeal,1 large sweet potato,or a wheat english muffin that will give you sustained energy for your workout and the begining of your day.Now for the training fuel right before you leave for the gym 1/2 cup of grape nuts cereal,plain yogurt(8oz),anything that is multi grain(it prevents muscle cramps and spasms).For instant recovery after your workout try a banana,1 cup of cranberry,gatorade or pineapple juice,or 1 large papaya,1/4 cup of raisins .These will replenish glycogen stores depleted by training.Within an hour of your workout you want to get some protein of some sort in your body,Being a can of tuna,Or a serving or two or beef jerky,8 large egg whites,1 cup of low fat cottage cheese.Protein packed foods will aid to promote recovery and manufacture lean muscle mass.Hope I was a help.
