Increase the octane rating of fuel used. A dirty MAF sensor, vacuum leaks, or clogged EGR passages would cause this as well.

99 fords 4.2 have a common problem with the knock sensor. It is a sensor that "listens" to the engine and when it senses a knock vibration, it signals the computer to change the timing accordingly. It only takes a few minutes to change and costs between $25 and $40 for the part. ( depending on the brand name) The timing chain was loose enough to rattle on the 4.2, it would shear the follower and the sound would be closer to having a series of hammers beating on the engine at all engine speeds. It definitely sounds like the knock sensor.
