there are plenty of companies that make excellent bikes for racing, while some are better value for money.
Trek, Giant, Colnago, Bianchi, Cervelo, Avanti, Cannondale...
Giant and Avanti will generally cost less when using equal quality components, although the other companies cost more for their reputation.
The decision is best made by looking at all the bikes within the decided price range and choosing the bike based on its geometry and features.

Go to shop and try a Trek and a Bianchi. If you like the trek you should consider Fuji as it is the same basic bike but main in Japan so it is cheaper. If you like the Bianchi you should look at Leader which is lesser known but the same frames.
The key to bike buying is what feels good. Some love all carbon..some say it is too stiff. Don't spend a lot of money to get all carbon if you can't really tell a difference. Light wheels will make the biggest difference as that weight is rotating. A heavy frame can be lighted by the rider losing pounds. Happy shopping!

These companies all make road bikes Raced by the best teams in the world. These are regularly seen at inter-nation road events.(If I have missed your favourite sorry)
De rosa, Bianchi ,Lapierre ,Scott, Giant, Colnago, Cannondale, trek, Cervélo,Pinarello Décathlon, Wilier,Eddy Merckx,Time, Look, Orbea,
Current uci rules limit a bikes weight to a minimum of 6.3 kg Many manufactures can make bikes lighter than this. These days they place titanium inserts to help stiffen the frames and keep the weight up to the minimum. This also makes for a good all round bike. There are many other manufacturers that make bikes to this standard.
This link will list all the good ones (and the not so good ones)

Depending on how much you would want to spend depends on how good of a bike you are going to get.
For less than $1500 you can get a base to mid level trek, giant, or cannondale.
Anything carbon is going to cost you in the range of 3k-5k. If you are just starting try getting a trek 1000 or a base giant. Once you excel in that you can move to the high products. If you already cycle and are looking for a great bike i would say an Orbea. ORBEA ORCA all the way. MSRP: $5300 handmade in Spain. great all around bike that can tackle hills to downhills amazingly

They worked with me four years ago to make a one-off custom frame that I still ride and LOVE to this day. Perfection!
