What is the purpose of the mosquito in ecology?
It is food for fish.
It is a carrier of some diseases.
Every living thing has things it does for the balance of the ecology. If you eliminate mosquitos, the balance has to be restored by some other creature(s)
Excess killing of the animals that prey upon deer has resulted in a deer population explosion. Add the enviro-wackos opposition to hunting deer for food and sport and we have an average of 10 deer hit by cars EVERY NIGHT on one stretch of road near here. Deer strip crops to eat.. and still have too high a population leading to mass starvations.
Its improper to think that the mosquito doesn't have a purpose. We don't have to fully understand its purpose. Its existence is vital to the balance of the ecology.
So whether you subscribe to evolution or creation... either would have made the mosquito to do the job it fills.

For every single reason that we learn about the benefits of the Mosquito in Biology class:
Mosquitos and their larvae make good fish fodder. Mosquito eggs make good frog and tadpole fodder.
Plus a few things that don't get taught in Biology class: They make a good seasonal scourge for mankind, to see how each of us will react to them: whether we would take the role of stewards, finding ways to allow Mosquitoes to continue to exist in their spheres, or if we would become genocidic like has happened in ages past, where mankind has taken several measures toward wiping out one of His creations.
Those are my thories, anyway.
For a more accurate answer, you might have to ask God himself.

To let us know that we are not such masters of our universe. What else can make a grown man repeatedly slap himself in the face when no one else had better do it? We can wipe out most species but mosquitos will rule until the end.

god - there is no god
All things are because of what proceeded them, you look at it all in amazement but look at this way - you accept a forest with trees but you would not accept one with clear glass spheres around 2 feet in diameter. Neither one is odd - but in context you look on in amazement. The universe is all energy we perceive it at intelligence thought and matter. Look at water is it a solid ice, liquid, steam, rain, humidity or just separated hydrogen and oxygen. Water is all those but it can't be made of nitrogen and oxygen - we have a choice we don't have the will to overcome the barrier that allows nitrogen to be part of water.

I think mosquitoes are God's answer to tails for humans, similar to dog tails. Have you ever watched a dog chase its tail? It's humorous. We are just Gods answer to owning a dog when we are slapping at mosquitoes!
