Its a really hot day here 37 degrees celcius and as usual the firies are out and the water bombers are zooming around overhead because some total idiot has decided to start a bush fire, this time only 150 metres away from a light industrial area. So tell me, what do you think the penalty should be for this?

To state the obvious, 90 percent of fires here are caused by arsonists or idiots flicking their cigarette butts out of car windows, and as far as Im concerned here in Australia that makes them arsonists too!! Deliberately started fires here cost millions in property damage and frequently cause loss of life. To add to that you have increased problems for those with lung disease like asthma and emphysema. Not to mention the damage to native wild life.

Wanted to let you know 2 houses were lost in the fire, it took only 6 hours to put out this time, not too bad, but the two families affected lost everything!

If someone looses their life in the fire, including fire fighters, death. If the fire destroys someones residence then they should be charged with attempted murder and get 20 to life.

Arsonists should be put to community work in the aftermath of fires so that they can begin to realize the damages and losses incurred by often ordinary people who have seen all that they own in the world turned into a cinder. Also arsonists should be made aware of the other human losses : The people maimed or killed by their actions and the emotional impact in the community as a result of this among family or friends of the victims. They should also meet and speak to the unsung heroes - volunteer fire fighters who have their own tales of grief because for every fire they have to fight, they put their lives on the line for us.

If I was on the left and the defendent was a child rapist, the answer would be...counselling and perhaps a disability pension. Perhaps for arson it would depend on whether a horrible greedy capitalist enterprise was damaged--in that case a free trip to visit Hugo Chavez would be an option, and subscription to the NY Times.

However, I would suggest a brush fire can be accidental--better have good evidence that it was malicious before you crank up a sentence. If accidental, the damaged parties can try to sue for damages, and the enviornmental damage might be mitigated by community service--tree planting if the person in physically able. If malicious, take the value of the property damage and or life lost to assess felony penaties already on the books in every jurisdiction.

In my world I'd demand an eye for an eye - I'd have the court light them on fire.

Not taking the bait you're laying down.

Jail time, assuming no loss of life.

I *do* hope for the best for your community there.
