My brother and his g/f bought a car together, they are not together anymore, she wants her name off the title and has already signed the title over to him, will it cost him to get her name taken off?

The car is paid off and both names are on the title, but how can he take her name off without having to register it to himself again.

I had this done in MD in summer 2004 and it was a major pain in the rear.

The car has to be reinspected. Once the inspection certificate is issued, that document and the original title is taken to the DMV. The car is re-registered in her name and I paid all that s--t out of my pocket. Total cost to me was $600.

If your state allows such a simple transfer of title, that is good. Moral of the story - let her pay her own d--n money to buy and title a car in her name only unless your brother is a millionaire.

If she signed the title over to him, it is basically his car now. Depending on the state, if the plates stay with the car or you have to get new plates when you change owners, he has to get the title in his name and register it in his name. There will be fees involved. New title and new registration. Charges vary state to state. If I were him, I would get a notarized letter from the girlfriend saying she GAVE him the car. That way he will avoid any sales tax that would be involved in "buying" the car. In many states, the gift won't be a problem since her name was on the original title. But I would rather be safe than sorry if they should audit the sale/gift. I am sure you can go to your states DMV website and get all the information you need to do this transaction, as well as your state fees.

If there is money owing on the vehicle,,then she is still legaly tied to the car.
she would have to make sure the debt on the car was paid off before her name could be taken off the title.

yes in a way because they bought the tags also in both names ,and he will need to get her name off if it,so its about the same thing as changing a registration but they might let him keep the plate that's on it,and just remove her name from it,if i was him id try it anyway, the worst thing that will happen is he will have to buy a different license plate for it,that's about all, good luck with it i hope this help,s.

you are worring about nothing,it should not cost more than approx.,10 dollars or less to get new registration, your not getting licsens, just title, even if you had to reregister car in your name,it would be in your best intrest,go to DMV and take care of it before it's to late.
