Not trying to step on any toes but I was thinking about this the other day. The Army, Navy and Marines all have planes so why do we need the Air Force? Seems kinda redundant doesn't it?

A rehtorical question for you is why do the MARINES fight on land? Isn't that what the Army is for?

No they really arent redundant while all the naval and marine airbranches bomb targets there main support is for troop and naval forces protections, while the airforce is responsible for bombing the more high risk targets. The navy and the marines dont have the facilities to care for a large bomber fleet or interconteniental nuclear missles they have other things to worry about I would want the airforce to launch a beach landing or try to build and aicraft carrier either. So no they arent redundant they have different jobs to do in the theater of war.

Not really. While they may all have planes, there are specialized fields that each individual sector of the United States Armed Forces is responsible for.

For example, the Navy is primarily responsible for protecting and providing services on ports, waterways, etc...the Marines are a special group to aid in combat zones, they cover a variety of things, the Army specializes in combat and aid while the air force specializes in topography, air combat, etc.

While I'm not in the military myself, I cannot give you the best answer but I have family members who have retired from the Air Force, and have attended the Air Force Academy so I can tell you, they are needed and what they do is essential to our freedom here in the US.

It is redundant somewhat. The marine planes are in support of the marine activities. The Navy planes in support of the Navy. The Air Force does it's own independent bombing and long range operations. Marines and Navy don't.

The Air Force ... others have air forces so it's logical to have an air force as well ... prudence is one of those things that enables anyone to have some thing that others have ... keeping up with the Joneses ... Look at the Cold War. America has the bomb. The former USSR had to have it too. Escalation to the brink of total and outright war and destruction. The air force is there to protect against other air forces. Like armies are their to fight land battles and the navy is there to fight other navies. If you were to abolish one then you would hope the other side would abolish theirs at the same time ... will that ever happen - God only knows. Probably not in our lifetimes though.

web,

Though the other services have aircraft to carry out certain missions, the U.S. Air Force specializes in ALL things related to aviation, and has specialized assets tailored to missions.

For example, each service has cargo aircraft, but no one has the assets to transport the sheer quantity of materiel like the USAF. Mission specific assets, such as air refueling tankers support all the services across the board, and are invaluable. Their value is not limited to logistics, however...no service comes close to having USAF's stealth aircraft...their F-22 Raptor is an awesome, quite capable aircraft as well.

To ph_yo: The Marines are an invasion force. Their primary duties are to go in light and establish enough of a beachhead and secure surrounding areas to move in a large land force (Army) so that they can do their job...that's how it's supposed to work, anyways...

I wouldn't want to go in to any war without ALL of the forces we have, whether it be Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marines... Our boys and girls are totally awesome. The more the better, you should be grateful they are there so you don't have to be...

Because even though the other branches have planes, we still need a branch that exclusively specializes in air-to-air and air-to-ground combat. Especially in modern warfare where destroying targets with precision from the air is so vital to success in a war.

because none of those air planes can match the power of the air force!!!!!!

and if you know anythign about the iraq war, do you know the war started?

It was two Air Force Pilots, flying in a stealth bomber, dropped a bomb on baghdad. If you remember it was all over the news, you see baghdad at night, and boom at a distant, a huge explosion, and all news channel saying "alert, war has started".

Give me a break! We are the air superiority (does that make sense?) of the world and the USAF is the main reason why.

Our B1B's, B-52's, just to name a few, are without equal and they are USAF planes

The mission of the Air Force, I believe, deals more with reconnaissance aircraft and space-based assets, such as satellites for imaging and communications. It is also tasked with nuclear weapons maintenance and delivery.

The air missions of the other military branches are more conventional combat oriented.

Air Force combat missions are typically restricted to strikes from "stealth" aircraft.
