Nice natural way?? Melatonin works (1-2 mg). You can get the stuff at any Health Food Store. If you want a more conventional medicinal approach: 1mg of Ativan will knock ya right out. Need a prescription, but it's cheap. It does become less effective over time though, so can't be relied on for long. Might just give your sleeping habits a little shove though.

here are my sleep tips:

go to bed and get up at the same time every day ,even weekends.

do only boring things that last hour before bed. no exercise, no computer time. Avoid bright lights.

Make sure your bedroom is totally dark, including covering up that digital clock and shutting the drapes/blinds/shades.

exercising during the day will tire you out so you sleep well later. shoveling snow is a good one, i noticed lately!!

avoid caffeine like the plague. a morning cup of coffee is ok, but nothing after 1 PM or so. some meds like cold remedies can ramp you up, too, look for the "agitation in children" label-some adults get trouble too

use a meditation tape, or guided imagery. Try a noise generator or CD of ocean waves to sleep if you live in the rackety city.

don't use your bedroom for anything but sleep (or sex, if you are an adult). No computer, no TV, no reading in bed.

If these things don't work after a month or so, you may have depression interfering with your sleep, and you should screen yourself for that. there are online depression screening tests. Or there could be something else wrong. don't take ambien, lunesta, etc. they are addictive and only work a week or so, then you're hooked and they aren't really helping anymore. (but you will get rebound insomnia if you quit).

The first and easiest thing to do is to really watch what you are drinking and eating, especially after 5 p.m. Many beverages, even diet ones, contain caffeine. Also, anything chocolate. I am not usually sensitive to caffeine, but if I eat a chocolate brownie at night, I can't sleep. It could be your body has just suddenly gotten more caffeine sensitive, so read labels.

Another thing is spicey foods. Maybe for a week stay away from eating spicey foods at night. And avoid eating anything at all for at least a couple of hours before going to bed.

Is your room too warm? Turn down the heat and sleep in a cooler room - - - just put extra blankets on the bed to keep your body warm. Taking a hot shower right before jumping into bed really helps me go right off to sleep. So that might help also.

I would question first whether insomnia is the only symptom you are experiencing or if it occurs in the context of other symptoms, in which case treatment may differ greatly. However, if it is your only symptom, there are several things you can try.
First, the most natural remedies have the least side effects and should be pursued first. I would suggest warm milk/turkey to activate the tryptophan which can help you with little risk and combining that with exercise daily. Be careful to avoid exercising too close to bedtime as it can lead to difficulty relaxing, so exercise should stop minimally 2 hours before bed. Obviously, avoid caffeine and other stimulants. Also avoid hot baths just prior to bedtime, but they can be helpful if taken at least an hour before you retire. Planning relaxing and non-stimulating activities before bedtime is also important.
Other natural remedies include melatonin, hops, kava-kava and valerian.
If you still experience difficulty, there are several sleep aids available that are less addicting than the older sedative-hypnotics (the benzodiazepines like valium, xanax, librium) which should never be prescribed for someone with chronic sleep problems. Some of the better ones are Ambien and Lunesta although Trazedone would be a good choice too as it as anti-depressant that is sedating but not addicting and increases serotonin production which aids in some sleep disorders.
Remember too, as I don't know your age, that the quality of sleep changes significantly as you age and is often less deep and less satisfying as you reach your 60's.
Lastly, if none of the above seem to alleviate the concern, ask your doctor to refer you to a sleep disorders clinic which may be able to detect subtle sleep disorders that impair your ability to fall asleep and stay asleep. If you tend to snore when you sleep, sleep apnea should be evaluated as this will diminish the quality of sleep and interfere with deep sleep.

what is going on in your life? Not that I need to know, but you do. While that might seem like a silly question, if there are things going on that occupy your thoughts on a constant basis, these things might be keeping you from sleeping. Anxiety, over anything is a good way to keep anyone from getting enough sleep. Analyze what is going on and see if there are any nagging problems that you keep spending time on. As for a good sleep aid, use Melatonin. It is available at most stores, and it will also boost your immune system.

i give myself a bed time. it's 11pm. yep it's almost my bedtime. before i never did. i'd be up at 1am. and cleaning and vaccuming. then one or more of my kids would stay up with me. not good habits. last september when school started (i homeschool) i decided to have a "normal" bedtime for me and the kids. the kids are down at 8:30 or 9 depending on how long bath time runs. and for me i have to be in bed at 11pm. i can't sleep without the t.v. so i put in a quiet movie. i have rituals that tell my body it's time to sleep now. i have my hot tea, i have my lotion ritual (love to put it on my hands and feet). i look at my bank statement. and then i tuck myself into bed. and that's it! no getting up. and i fall asleep after that. perhaps you need some nite time rituals. try that before you get on the otc meds. good luck!

try a new over the counter product called "SLEEPMD"
if that does not work talk to your doctor & see what can be prescribed...Ambien & Lunesta are great prescription sleep aides.
If your lookin for more of a natural remedy try a product called "Natural Calm" usually available at a natural/organic food store. It works great i use it...& theres no chance of dependency unlike Ambien & Lunesta.

If you are not getting good sleep , there are many reasons involved for this , it can be your habit, attitiude, tensions,etc you have not mention properly why you are not getting good sleep.

dear friend before going to sleep , keep your body and soul tension free.

make it a habit that you go early to bed and wake early morning

before going to bed make it a point that iwant a good slepp and then sleep , no tension and no worrys, becasue if you take everything with your sleep, you wont get sound sleep.

take a cold water bath before sleep because heat body can also be a reason for not getting sleep.

never argue before going to bed.

hear good music and watch some comedy programme in tv before sleep it will aslo relax your body

never take any sleeping pills for sleeping it will only make your nervous weak in future.

Drink cow milk before sleeping and avoid alcohol before sleeping .

you can also learn meditation through good master and practice regular before sleep.

Meditation might help, if it doesn't help you get to sleep it will at least help you feel better. It can't replace sleep but it can substitue a few hours.
