No, rats are not the norm...they used to be years ago, but that hasn't been the case for a while. Check the Village Voice as well as craiglist.org to get some of the better deals. I found my place in the Village Voice and it was rent stabilized and I didn't have to pay anyone a finders fee or anything. Roaches can be a problem but most buildings will exterminate monthly. The problem comes in when all of the tenants don't exterminate.

It's been a couple of years since I lived in NYC but I lived in midtown Manhattan and paid $1000 for a one bedroom apt. Also, I don't know what industry that you're working in but a lot of people will share apartments. That's highly typical on the Upper East side.

Good luck!

That is really not true. While I'm sure you can find a cheap, rat-filled apartment if you want one, it is not the norm.

The lowest rent really depends on where you want to live, and whether or not you would be willing to share an apartment. Sometimes getting into a room-mate situation ends up to be cheaper because all the costs are split.

You can find affordable places in Inwood, Washington Heights, Astoria (Queens), Fort Greene (Brooklyn). Sometimes there are good deals to be found in lower Manhattan, but you really have to spend some time looking for them.

Check out craigslist.org for shares or small studios.
