He is an 8 year old American bulldog and has bone cancer in his front left leg. My vet said she can remove the leg an that will buy him another 6 to 8 months or so but thats it. The problem is his front end is twice as large as his rear end and I don't think he'll have good mobility as other dogs would.

I read that there are special medicines and diets that can slow down the spreading and help out with the pain. Don't get me wrong, I will put him dowm when I have to but I want to keep around as long as I can and as long as hes is not hurting. He is still so young at heart.

Please help...
Please

My dad went through this with his Rottie last year. The vet can give you pain meds for him to keep him comfortable. Beyond that, most treatments will be more for your benefit than for your dogs. They are painful, scary, and just not worth it in my opinion. I know you love your dog, and you want to keep him around, but please think of him. Bone cancer is not something you want to mess with. It can put your dog through hell as it progresses. Having gone through it myself, I would recommend keeping him comfortable and enjoying your time you have left with him. Don't be selfish about it. Think of what is best for him. When it is time for him to be put down, you will know, and hopefully you will have yourself prepared and make peace with it while you still have him. I know it is a difficult thing to go through, but you have to think of him. Just keep him comfortable until it is his time. I'm so sorry you are having to go through this. Our rottie was 14 when we had to have her put down finally, the cancer had eaten away her back hips and she could no longer stand. It was the hardest thing we have ever had to do, but once she started feeling the pain we knew there was no other option. We tried medications in the beginning that the vet recommended, but all they did was make her sick and didn't slow the spread of the cancer. If I had to do it again, I would have not wasted the time making her sick with them.

Awww...I'm so sorry : ( That's a hard thing to deal with. Of course you want to keep him comfortable and control his pain. Firstly, ask your vet for a prescription strength painkiller and as for the diet, I'm not sure about that. You could probably find a good bit of info. on the internet.

I'm a dog lover too so give your pooch a hug for me. Start with a good painkiller though. I'll keep you in my thoughts!!

I know your feeling. Frankly, there is nothing that you or an expensive vet can do.

If your dog is not hurting...you can tell if he does not have a smile...just leave him be.

My dog, when she was 8, had tumors. They didn't seem to bother her...but it did bother me. She was always spunky and had a smile on her face.

She appeared to be happy and no pain. She just laid down and died a few weeks ago, she was 13.

Your love for him is all he needs. That's better than any medicine.

Sorry to hear about the cancer. i've read a couple of articles in whole dog journal that recommend certain types of diets for certain cancers. you may want to look at their website to find their article. my friend's dog had cancer in her stomach. she changed her diet to pure chicken meat. it extended the dog's expentancy life that the doctor gave. when it got really bad she put the dog down. good luck.
