I think the most important lesson is that every choice has a consequence, and you can teach that by allowing kids to experience the consequences of their actions instead of bailing them out every time they get in trouble.

One of the most important lessons that you can teach your child is how to eat healthy and exercise. The best way to do this is by example. Make sure that you offer healthy snacks like apples and whole grain crackers. Try to make walks a daily activity. Taking a walk with a dog every day is something that toddlers and all kids love. You can use walking to the park as an excuse. When you get the mail, walk around 2 blocks or more and grab the mail on the way in.

I think the most important lesson a parent can teach a child is that God is Savior..You teach this by talking about God in your home, going to church, and walking what you teach!!!!

But mostly walking what you teach that should be done with everything that you teach your child.
Example: Telling you kids not to cuss and then you call your neighbor a SOB

Lead by example. Don't tell a child not to do something then you turn around and do it in front of him or her. Example, telling a kid not to curse and then you curse someone out.
Practicing what you preach. Being responsible, and teaching them also about responsibility. Like that money does not grow on trees. Things must be earned. You can earn things by helping around the house and getting good grades in school.
My parents had to work outside the home, so my siblings and I had to keep the house clean and nice. We got an allowance every week. Then if we wanted records(Cd's) movies(DVDs) or a telephone (extra land line back then) we had to find ways to earn the money to get what we wanted. Nothing was just given to us.

To be respectful and obedient.

To value education and work hard.

To be healthy.

To be caring and sympathetic.

To be positive and confident.

These lessons are best taught by modeling. A parent must show the child what type of life they want them to have.

The parent must treat others with respect. They must be respect the children too. They must respect them enough to discipline them. They must discipline when they are not obedient. Children need to learn to follow directions and do what is asked. They need to not whine and argue. Being respectful of other people and property too. Children must learn that toys are a privledge and if they aren't taken care of they will be taken away.

Children are natural learners and need to be encourage from day one. Parents must read to them all the time. Provide learning experiences. Let them see them reading for enjoyment. Turn off the television. Work on assignments together. Be excited about your childrens education. Children that have parents that lay around will lay around too.

Model healthy eating habits. Model exercise. Teach the importance of brushing your teeth, going to the dentist, taking vitamins. Children need to have parents who take pride in their appearance. Set high expectations for your children - they deserve that.

Children need to learn that the world doesn't revolve around them. They need to see you being thoughtful. See you helping friends. Seeing you cry over someone else's problems. They need to see you use manners. You need to ask them for help and praise them after they help you. Show them how helping others feels good. Show them that mean words hurt. Remind them of times that they have been hurt.

Live life with a good attitude. Wake up each morning with a smile. Be happy to see each other. Set traditions, always make time for a hug good bye. Let the children know how proud you are of them. Remind them of the great thing they did last week or how good they are at science. Let them hear you telling others of good things they have accomplished.

Take Care,
SD

Others gave you a lot of good answers. For me personally as a single mother I think it is important to teach them about making compromises. Teaching them young is a good way to prepare them for their future. My son didn't understand at first but he does now. If you think about it, we compromise everyday of our life.

P.S. I also agree with Amy.

I think when children finally can "own up" to their own errors,or mistakes,(without time-outs or imposed punishments from a parent).then we as parents can feel a little easier that we have raised honest human beings..because nobody is perfect and honesty will go a long way..

Responsibility, social skills, and common sense. You can teach these things by continued communication, giving them ample opportunities at home to experience these types of situations, and through the most important thing...ROLE MODELING!

How important independence is. When I was young, my dad told me to always make sure I could take care of myself because you dont want to rely on anybody else to take care of you. That person could pass on or leave you and then where would you be? I plan to tell that exact thing to my daughter when shes old enough to understand its importance.
