from having a real conversation with somebody in public?

So many feel it's wrong for others to chat on their cells at ANY time. They think it's ok to tell others to turn off their phones or to go away or give them dirty looks. They would not act that way if the person were chatting next to a live person instead. Is it open season now on anybody with a cell phone?
I'm NOT referring to people who use their cells in places where it would not be ordinarily allowable to have normal conversations (i.e. church, library, theater, etc.) I am NOT referring to people who use their cells in voices louder than a normal conversation. Nor am I talking about neglecting a live person to take a cell call. I can see how that could be annoying.
I AM talking about what is wrong with sitting in a restaurant, bar, store, bus, etc. using the same volume one would use if they were talking to somebody else sitting there? Is it because the eavesdroppers cannot hear the other side of the conversation?

You are absolutely correct. It is fashionable to make comments about people on cellphones. It is just another way people won't mind their own business. If a person talks in a normal voice, there is no reason to fault them.

Because a cell phone converstation isn't a real two sided conversation. We only get to hear your side of the call, and it's very disorienting. That is why people get so uncomfortable about cell phone users.

Also, a lot of cell phone users talk very loudly - especially when they've been yacking so much that they didn't take the time to listen to the other person.

It's really annoying to hear some cell phone user yelling 'WHAT? - WHAT DID YOU SAY? - WHAT? - SAY THAT AGAIN?" at the top of her lungs!!

Or hearing them give a nauseatingly co-dependent second by second update of how soon they will meet the other person (you especially here this on New York City Transit busses "I'M AT LENOX AV! I'LL BE THERE IN 5 MINUTES!! IT'S TWO MORE BLOCKS!! I'M AT ADAM CLAYTON POWELL BLVD NOW!! IT'S ONLY ONE MORE BLOCK!!! I'LL BE THERE IN 3 MINUTES!!

I HATE that!!!!

Which brings me to the biggest problem with cell phone users, or to be more specific, FEMALE cell phone users!!

These women have cell phones permanently clamped to their ears - they have these continuous open ended conversations with whoever (I guess it's their best friend, or their mothers, or their daughters, or sisters or whoever) and they have the phone practially attached to their ear!!

They can't put the phone down to pay the fare on the bus or to order food at McDonalds or coffee at Starbucks.

The other day I was in the DMV and this lady in front of me had this neurotic 20 minute conversation venting about how somebody at her job was supposedly "out to get her" and how she'd "show that *****" - and this chick didn't even put down the phone when she got to the head of the line!!! She just kept ranting and raving to her friend while she handled her business with the DMV guy!!!

Get a life, cell phone users!!!

I have a cell phone too - and I use it maybe 3 or 4 minutes a DAY!!

Cell phones were originally invented for people to make quick calls from the street in an emergency. You should only use your cell to tell somebody when to meet you, or what time you're going to be home, or to pick up some milk on the way home - then put the damned phone down!!!

As you stated, the only situation is whilst an in line conversationalist, disrespects others by potential of by potential of not purposefully focusing on the significant factors of an coming near near transaction and "possible arrogantly" motives others frustration in an already, mundane complicated sufficient necessity in existence...In different words...some persons can not multitask effectively, others as myself, are in a position...(Ambidextrous drummers have an benefit)...some could desire to,some shouldn't.... (((pc))) won't have understood the question...She's a rather darn smart gal(arguably, the main smart ever in this board)...I rather much submitted a question this night asking the place the two she and Markyyy have been(he hates cyber-hugs) (((demise)))...nicely,I propose not demise,actually...i'm a innocuous, hugging ignorant Christian fundamentalist and doubt (to respond to your 2d question) that God somewhat cares a great deal approximately our cellular-telephone ettiquite...He might in simple terms choose to take heed to from you,the two in or out of line..

I don't like to hear the ringing while eating at a nice restaurant but people talking on the phone doesn't bug me at all. I am having my own conversation and supper, I don't care what someone else is doing at their table.

If they're not loud and obnoxious, I don't see the problem with it. I really wouldn't want to be out eating at a fancy resteraunt with the next person at their table yelling into their phone as if it's some kind of status symbol. But if they're quiet and minding their own business, then mind yours.

Well, if you are in the company of person A, but are talking to person B ( whether on the cell phone or live) to the ignoring of person A then that would be rude

Cell phones are intrusion of privacy especially when you are trying to have a conversation with someone and their phone keeps ringing, irritating.
