I decided to get a new PC even though my Sony Vaio is only 1.5 yrs old bec it's so slow & keeps getting hung up... perhaps beyond repair or because my kids use it, so I want my own PC.

Anyway, PC shopping I discover there's a new OS, so at first I think, Cool.

I created an order with Gateway that has Vista as the OS for a computer that will be ready by March 20th.

Anyway, I picked up PC World magazine where it indicated the Gateway FX530XT was the best of the new desktops, which I bought! I was so happy until I read the articles re: negatives on incompatibility w/drivers & software problems & that "first generation Vista desktops lack some of the components that take advantage of the interesting features in Windows Vista"

I really don't want to get XP if they now have a new OS out there.

Anyway, is it important for me to try to cancel the order & wait 6 more months? Or should I just go ahead with it now that it's March?

I was so excited to get the new computer

(continued)....

and now I don't know what to do.

I don't believe in getting the XP with Vista upgradable.

I learned with my first computer that upgrading is never worth it.

There are so many problems with upgrading, especially the OS, adding in expense and time, etc, it would be better to just buy a new computer & get the latest thing at the time.

(So... no recommendations to get XP upgradeable to Vista)

Thanks!

Both RegCure and RegSweep have made my system worse and create new errors, so I had to stop scanning.

So... they don't work!

I actually haven't had a lot of trouble with vista....some programs aren't compatible yet but they'll come around soon enough. Also have some minor issues like drivers for my moto razr aren't available yet.....all in all it actually is a decent upgrade from xp and seems to run quite well enough.

The major issue with the fx series is that the new motherboards they're running for that are actually very new chipsets....bios drivers are having all kinds of issues and need regular flashing. The new standard for running multiple video cards in sli or crossfire mode is still developing and none of the bugs are worked out yet....not to mention gateway is offering the fx factory overclocked....nothing wrong by itself but then giving it to customers who know little of maintaining stability in an overclocked system.

I wouldn't worry too much about vista itself....newer hardware will see driver support if not right away then soon. I would be cautious about the higher end systems though. I'm sure gateway will figure it all out but there's some trial and error going on with the graphics and main board developers right now.

Actually, with the price of those systems it's more reasonable to put 400 bucks towards and xbox 360 and pick up a more reasonable computer system. They want several thousand for the top models with dual graphics cards and kilowatt power supply and you'll always be chasing your tail for gaming hardware. Any modest system for a lot less will handle everything but top end gamis just fine. Either an xbox or ps3 would have full game support easily for 5 years without any hardware headaches.

Go ahead and get it since you're excited about it. Gateway will make sure that you have drivers for all your hardware, so the computer itself should be fine. Microsoft is releasing lots of patches, so as long as you set your computer up to download updates then you should get the latest patches quickly.

Keep in mind that Vista is brand new, and different. It will be frustrating at first since there's going to be a learning curve. Still, it looks very nice and has some good features. I'd advise you to buy a book on Vista (believe it or not, "Vista for dummies" is a good reference, and affordable as well. And it has good cartoons) and read up on it so you can get the most out of the machine.

May I make a suggestion? Before buying a new desktop or notebook, I'd like to recommend a free program for you to download and run on your present computer that very well may clear up many of the problems you're having on your present system. It's a free version of "Advanced Windows Care Personal" and can be downloaded at the below link. Download it and install it, and then run it. Let it go through its process, and I can almost guarantee you that you will see a marked increase in speed and reliability compared to the way your system is running now. Good luck, and hope this helps.

I think that you should get it now because they have the updates every month that are exactly the same. Of course it's not going to be perfect at first like any OS. Go ahead and keep your order.-im not too sure about gateway though..hope this helps!

there are driver issues because no one knows about vista yet. i would wait just a little bit longer . but if you want one now here are really good websites and the best way not to worry about drivers is to buy one with vista already on it
tigerdirect.com outpost.com newegg.com buy.com
i usually buy from those

many people are so hooked up with the new os --vista. there are lots of computers in the market that are now vista ready. try searching one. but my only suggestion is, forget the whole vista thing and look for a computer that will suite your "daily pc" needs.

I received my customized Gateway FX Friday and I love it. The tower is bigger than I expected but it is pretty. It does zoom.
