Okay, I know that seems like a weird question, so here's a little more background. I consider myself a "city mouse". Never been camping, always lived in urban places, not a big "nature" fan, etc... But as I've gotten older, I kinda regret never learning how to start a fire, pitch a tent or tie a decent knot, but it was never a HUGE disappointment. Anyways... a good friend of mine is getting married later this year, and myself and my pals have all agreed that a week of canoeing/camping/fishing, etc. would be more enjoyable and memorable than hitting strip clubs. I'm always up for a new adventure, but I'm 30 years old and have never been camping EVER! So I'd like to learn some basic woods skills, I guess. Not crazy "kill a deer with your bare hands and eat its heart" sorta stuff. Just stuff like how to tie knots, figure out where I am (North vs. South) and other stuff that those who've been Boy Scouts or Cub Scouts take for granted, but I never learned. Any help is greatly appreciated!

There are several programs you might be interested in- you can learn about most of them at your local outdoors store or hunting supply.

Many state game and parks departments run programs like this. Some outdoors group runs a program called 'Women in the Wild' or something like that (if I remember correctly, it is associated with turkey hunters).

If you sign up to be a Scout leader, they train adults in many Scout skills, and of course if you have the time you can go to any of the big 'outdoor leadership' schools in the US.

Some community colleges or local universities also offer classes in some of these skills- either credit classes or adult continuing ed.

Another option- places that sell canoes usually have canoe classes. Places that sell fishing gear often have fishing programs, etc. Good stores don't want to loose a sale just because you don't know anything!

What *I* would do would be to take a few classes to get started, then find a couple buddies who KNOW this stuff and arrange a couple weekends.

You stated you do not imagine there are illiterate call, yet then supply an party of it - Zhiplkk as Bob - the way it truly is illiterate, (quite than only incorrect?) hence you've proved your human being aspect. There are names that are illiterate. The question is the position do you draw the line. Keeva effectively is, there is not any reason to spell the call like that, like yet another poster stated it truly is like spelling "confusing" words phonetically because they are confusing. we do not settle for that once human beings study the English (or the different) language. Why do not we get rid of the "ok" in knee or the "g" in gnome? They reason confusion. we do not because it truly is how they are spelt and individuals only favor to address it. the numerous issue that exists is that names come or originate in various diverse languages, like yet another human being wrote Natalia (?) i imagine yet with a more suitable Russian/Slavic spelling and deemed that inaccurate. As an English speaker, I particularly have particular ideas obviously, yet little question so does easily everyone, those who're fluent in French or Spanish or maybe Gaelic. yet that would not advise a acceptance written in yet another language is faulty. besides the undeniable fact that, attempting to pass a "unique" call off as an identical is the position the annoyance for me lies, because it isn't an identical issue. in addition replacing a letter (maximum usually including a "y" even as it truly is no longer the sound needed) highlights peoples finished push aside for the easily pronunciation of the call, and the very undeniable truth that they only like it to "look marvelous" or wonderful or regardless of the truth that. yet like you're saying, the point of a acceptance is to perceive us. Why are *you* then giving someone a acceptance that obviously would not make experience, is going to reason them countless quantities of subject matters only because of aesthetics?

Boy scouts leadership training for scoutmasters is essentially a series of campouts where experienced leaders have the trainees act as if they were scouts.

So, there is similar training for adults.

Search yahoo for wilderness survival training in your area. You could also contact your nearest national park and see if they offer services like this. I would think businesses that offer whitewater rafting tours and things of that nature would also be able to point you in the right direction.
