You don't state how dark the oak stain on the flooring is...However, I would do the cabinets in a lighter stain. Consider stained glass doors on two cabinets. This opens up the area, and adds visual interest without being overdone...
I'd also consider a solid surface top for your counter. Keep it mostly a lighter pallete. It can have flecks of darker colors, but not heavily....
As for paint, just how much painted surface will you have no counting the ceiling. If it's just the back splash, look at tiling it for a great personal effect. You could do it yourself fairly inexpensively and play with accent tiles, like glass or of a different size and work it into a pattern.
You also don't say what color appliances you have. I would think that your paint color would serve to help tone down the room and let your personality shine!

Since you say the kitchen is small, light colors on the walls will create an illusion of more space. (A light neutral beige goes with everything!) I think wood cabinets in a simple design and light colored finish would lend to about any decorating theme you want to go with. For the counter tops, I would go with a darker color because I have found from experience the lighter counter tops show stains much faster!!

I also have a small kitchen and when I remodeled it ...I used the lightest shade of my favorite color...which is green...If you pick your favorite color then go to any paint store and look at the swatches and go with the absolute lightest shade almost white with a tint of your chosen color. The cupboards I would try to keep with your oak chosen material in your floor. As far as your counter then you need to find whichever you color you choose to paint with, with a hint of the brown..(flecks) in the coloring. However these days most Ppl are going with the stone colors...slate ,granite, etc.shop with your swatches of paint and stain for cupboards. Sounds like so much fun!
P. S. I white washed my cupboards to keep my area looking large. Also try placing a mirror on a wall , helps to make feel even larger :-)

try white cabinets, with dark counter tops, let say dark beige, you can paint your walls burgundy red, burnt orange (my favorirte0 or sage green, what is important to make the room bigger in a kitchen is the cabinets' color.

I will try white cabinets. If this is a small room light colors will enlarge the space. Grey countertop, yellow paint.

The success of any decorating scheme depends on how well it suits all the members of your family. To create a décor that you will be happy with, think about what you want and also what you don’t want.
