My cat is 2 yrs old, and she dose not like to be picked up. When I pick her up she growls and hisses at me, and then scratches me to be let down. Her front paws are declawed, we just recentally got her back claws declawed, what can I do to stop that?

Maybe she doesn't like to be cuddled. I had a cat like this once, and it wasn't until his old age that he allowed me to hold him and pet him. One of my cats that I own now was picked up and handled from infancy, so he is accustomed to it and will jump on my lap for some petting. I guess it just depends on the cat and its personality.

You might try talking to your cat and petting her while you are sitting on the floor. Then, when she is responsive - all limber and "purr -y," try bringing her close to you, then pull her gently onto your lap as you continue to stroke and pet her.

When she allows you to hold her without scratching or hissing, praise her and reward her with a little cat treat. Keep the "lap" sessions brief at first, until she becomes used to it.

You could also try brushing or combing her. My cats enjoy this and find it very relaxing. We start out on the floor for this ritual, then sometimes one of them will climb onto my lap for some more attention.

Um, is this a riddle? How is she scratching you with no claws?

First, some cats just don't like to be picked up. I have a stray who was abused as a kitten and we cannot pick him up. Some cats have arthritis that hurts them when picked up, but your cat is young, so that's probably not a factor.

Second, your cat is probably reacting to the declawing. It knows that it has no defense now (not to mention having lost the first joint of its toes!), so it reacts violently when it feels uncomfortable. Some cats bite to overcompensate.

My advice: stop picking up kitty. And don't remove any more body parts, if at all possible. That would make me pissy too.

She's obviously not a cuddler. Let her be and go find a kitten that enjoys lovings! Good way to pick one out is to flip them on their back and if they struggle, they don't like to snuggle. If they lay there and let you continue to hold them, most likely will be a snuggler.

Then the doctor didn't declaw the cat right.

Don't pick her up. Many cats don't like to be picked up. Would you?
