If its not done right there is a nerve in your tounge that could be damaged. While all people are different and will respond differently to the 'wounding' caused by tongue piercing, there are things to consider before piercing the tongue. First and foremost: are the instruments used to pierce the tongue, lips, or cheek clean and sterile? Secondly, the tongue has many blood vessels and is heavily supplied with sensitive nerve endings; therefore, the piercing can cause quite a bit of bleeding and pain. Any time jewellery is inserted through the oral soft tissues, infection is a real concern. If the metal is not pure, allergic reactions may also occur. The barbell end of the jewellery pierced through the tongue, lip, or cheek can be removed but it is usually worn permanently. This can lead to chipped teeth, difficulty eating, and difficulty speaking clearly. It is not uncommon for the tongue to swell up for several days after the piercing procedure. One report described a case where the swelling partially blocked the patient's trachea (windpipe) and caused serious difficulty breathing!

I'm a dental hygienist and I can give you a couple bad things about a tongue ring/stud. Alot of people that have them come in with several chipped teeth, just seems to happen alot, especially the front teeth which isn't very appealing. The worst case thing to happen is if they person doing the piercing isn't very familiar with the innervation of the tongue (where the nerves lie) and they sever a nerve by accident. That could mean anything from permanant loss of sensation or taste to loss of proper movement of the tongue muscle. In my mind, there is no good thing about having it done. It's not attractive at all and can cause damage. If you do decide to have it done, you'll get instructions for how to care for it from the person doing the piercing. And for the record, I'm not an old fart fuddy duddy, I'm 41 years old and had my belly button pierced. I don't have anything against piercings just not on the head/neck area (eyebrow piercings dont' look like jewelry to me, they look like shrapnel!) :) Good luck!

The good thing about tongue rings is that they can be tossed away quickly. Further, the hole left by the ring usually closes. The BAD things about tongue rings is that sometimes, when placing a tongue ring, horrible infections result with swelling, pain, and yes, even cases where part of the tongue is lost. Sometimes, one can sever the lingual artery if it happens to be in the wrong anatomical area and you could have a life-threatening bleeding episode. Further, some tongue rings when mulled about in the mouth, can chip and damage tooth structure, resulting in cavities, etc.

Well my friend got a tongue ring and she cleaned it by using mouthwash that's acohol free. The thing they check for when they peirce your tongue is a white vein. If they hit that you could die. But as long as they're certified and know what they're doing it shouldn't be a problem. It might hurt but I've been told that it doesn't. I know alot of people with tongue rings. When you get it done you'll slobber alot and they'll tell you not to drink with a staw for a while.

Well, people will assume you are some slut that loves to give head. I guess you can put that in whatever column you'd like, but many employers don't like to see tongue rings, and there is a risk of infection. The good thing is that some people feel that oral sex is better with one.

INFECTIONS! I've seen major infections that require drainage, and even surgery. Of course, this is the extreme. It doesn't hae to be bad as long as the ENTIRE process is done correctly. Go to a highly visited and clean provider. Sterile environment, equipment, preparation is a must! After (and beforehand too) consult with your doctor about the best method of cleaning and healing. Most medicines (like triple antibiotic, peroxide, etc) should be dealt with cautiously because of possibility of ingestion.

The good thing is that I like it, I like the way it looks, the way it feels..the attention it receives...the downside. it hurt to get done...after about a week...i think i could eat "normally" I ate a lot of soup and drank a lot of cold water...I had to learn to use my tongue with it in...blowing a bubble was a trick..Talking was a chore for about 2 weeks after getting it done...Ive bit it a couple times...*ouch*
Some people chip their teeth by playing with their tongue rings...
Some other good things about it..they make attachments for it...like a vibrating tongue ring..or other sexual attachments...which i think it cool....taking care of it is easy..just wash with a lot of listerine...

the tongue ring can lead to increased infection and pain of the tongue. it can impair the ability to clean your mouth and teeth & can damage the enamel on your teeth. the hole it leaves may be permanent. people will judge you based on the tongue ring. it is painful to have your tongue pierced. it is an unnecessary expense.
ummmm - can't think of anything bad. above are the good points.

Good thing: You can finally have an answer for "Why does my mouth have a metallic taste?"

Bad Thing: You probably won't like the side effect of having a speech impediment (have you not heard what people with those things sound and talk like?)

ironic thing: "(just a normal one)" .......hahahaha!!!!!!!
