If you cook something with too much salt is there a way to make it less salty?

Depending of the "Food" you're referring to, a sauce or stew can be "de-salted" by simmering a cut-up potato in it

I agree with the other posters that a sliced raw potato can help soak up the extra saltiness in a dish -- but it depends on what you're cooking. The raw potato method works best in a soup, stew or something that has enough liquid/sauce in it.

Another method if you have a dish that is more 'dry' (without a sauce) is to add a squeeze of lemon. The lemon will balance out some of the extra saltiness -- but of course it adds its own lemon-y flavor also and will alter the taste of the dish.

In the same way that you can balance the extra salt with lemon, depending on the dish you could also add sugar instead of lemon to counter-balance the salt.

Lastly, if you simply have a piece of meat (eg, a steak) which got too salty, you could gently rinse the meat under water to rinse off the excess salt. Again, the taste of the dish will be altered because the other seasonings would get rinsed off too.

Hope this helps!
