Elephentiasis is also called Filariasis. It is not a genetic disease. It is endemic in some tropical countries. It is caused by the nematode parasites like 'Wuchereria bancrofti" . It is spread by the sting of culex mosquito. The disease is not transmitted to fetus from mother. It is diagnosed by "night blood" examination as the larvae of parasites appear in blood only during night time. . After lymphatic obstruction occurs the parts are swollen giving the disease its name The swelling can`t be reduced with any medicines. Only plastic surgery helps. Hetrazan chemically, diethyl carbimazine citrate is the drug of choice to treat the infection. Environmental hygiene prevents the disease.
