you fret with your left hand if you're a right hand player and and you tap the frets with your right.when your left hand isn't toughing the fret board,your right one should be and visa verse.it's kind of like when you tap on a table with your fingers.i hope this helps you.

By the way there is the opposite where you use a finger on that same hand to pull away the string (plucking with the off hand). That is called a pull-off.
