The full size Glock Model 22, in .40 S&W caliber. It is the standard sidearm of over 80% of local, state and Fed. agencies. This gun has replace the old S&W Model 10 revolver in .38 special as the standard law enforcement sidearm.

It would depend on the environment and application. Common weapons are listed above. I feel that some weapons might be superior...given the weather, terrain/environment, population density, etc, etc. Thats a complicated question....here is why..
Glock or Sig 9mm you say? Great for high population areas given the round characteristics and capacity.
.45??? Colt, SIG, H&K- More performance and take down power. Easily customized for SWAT or SRT.
12 Gauge- (Mossberg, Rem, SPAS, Benelli, etc -Excellent close range breaching weapon
M4 Carbine- Excellent dual purpose rifle. Long range..penetrating round. Host of additional equipment, low cost, high capacity.
REMEMBER...APPLICATION IS THE KEY, NOT MARKETING

I am a retired Police Officer and carried a revolver till my last day on duty. I preferred quality over quaintly. Many of my fellow officers went to the S&W 40 cal. Now revolvers by Smith are seven shot and they make a 50 cal. My concern was the jamming of simi-autos, founded or not I had seen too many of them jam. A revolver is traditionly more accurate. I alway thought 9mm's were a girls gun. No offense meant.

It seems that most law agencies have decided that Glock in .40 is the right choice. Model 22 or 23.
As for whats best, that should be a personal decision.

The Glock 9 mm is probably the most common law enforcement pistol in the western world. Most people are not that accurate with a pistol, so the fine differences are generally a wash.

I loved my Glock, over 10,000 rounds though it and never a single jam. ( Idid clean it all the time and keep the spring replaced often)
but many liked the Sig and I knew a few that carried S/W
a few still carried a revolver but had trouble making the time on a handgun qualificatin, since they are set now for a semi auto with timed shooting and timed reloads,

Springfield XD in S&W.40 or maybe GAP.45. Glocks are overrated....good though....
XD has double safety part Glock with trigger and part 1911 with safety on back of grip.

Glock .40 cal, Glock model 22 for me. Easy to shoot, easy to take apart, and easy to clean and put back together. Never had any issues at all.
