I am planning on getting my first tatto but i'm a little uneasy about how its going to hurt. Is there anything i can do to lessen the pain. I've heard of a lotion that you can put on your skin to numb it, anyone else heard of this?

Yeah they have a numbing spray available(someone had special requested it at the place I went to), but you really don't need it. I got my first tattoo right on my hipbone yesterday and it wasn't bad at all. I was a big fat chicken and freaked myself out beforehand, then I felt really stupid when it didn't hurt much at all--like a 3 on a scale of 10. I've had paper cuts that hurt more. The only painful part for me was sitting still for an hour and not being able to move or talk. There were spots that hurt more than others, but that only lasted for a few seconds and there were other parts where it either felt like a tickle or I couldn't feel it at all. The guy who did my tattoo said 9 of 10 people say it wasn't as bad as they thought it was going to be. Just go for it, the pain is part of the fun, good luck :)

you're referring to Emla cream....it's by prescription only and once it wears off...your senses are heightened and there's the potential that the tattoo will hurt more and also there's a chance that it can increase the bleeding in the area of your tattoo which would potentially mess up your tattoo. There are many artists that will not tattoo you if they know that you've used this cream. It's really not as bad as you think. I have a needle phobia and I'm going back in for my second or addition in 2-3 weeks. Make sure that you eat a good meal before you get your tattoo....find something to look at and focus on it. Don't forget to breathe...it will be ok and not that bad...really...

I know what your talking about but once you go there to get done it's not as bad as most people make it sound I had two done in one day and the bast thing I can tell you is see if a friend can go with you so you have someone to talk to because that's what I did and it seemed to take my mind off the pain of getting a tattoo.

A tattoo does hurt, but the pain is tolerable. What hurts most is having to sit in the same position and not move for 2-4 hours! Your muscles start to cramp and you just want to move!

DO NOT TRY PAIN RELIEF !!!!! seriously im a tattoo artist and i always ask people who get their first tattoo if they have taken any paracetamol or drank alcohol or used any form of creem the reason being pain killers thin your blood and same goes for any form of pain relief

basicly you will bleed uncontrolably if you use pain relief so i dont tattoo people under the influence of painrelief

look tattooes dont hurt its more of a plesant buzzing sensation its actually nice also it is adictive i can prove it im covered head to toe i love tattooes i even have full sleves and a huge koi on my back which coveres nearly all of my back

I have not heard of numbing lotion but, a good place to get a tat is where you have some extra meat don't get a tat in a boney place. Really do research on the place your thinking about getting it done for cleanliness. Make sure you get it of something you will like even when you are old. maybe something floral.

i have four tattoos. have not heard of the lotion, but depending on where you get it put at, it can hurt from a annoying little bit to OUCH. i have one on my right ankle, one on the right back/shoulder, and one on each shoulder/front. the last 2 were done in 2006. i nearly went to sleep while the artist was working on them. afterward, they did not hurt too bad. just like a rug burn or skinned knee. just do 1 thing before yuo get it. check out the studio for cleanliness. good luck and enjoy your tattoo

Most topical creams end up making your skin like rubber when an artist goes to tattoo it, so PLEASE forego this option. Most tattoos really aren't that bad, I have 15 and the worst was across my toes, but that lasted only about 10 minutes and it was over and done with. If you absolutely MUST, take ibuprofen an hour before, but try not to take anything, as even ibuprofen thins your blood and makes you bleed more when you tattoo. It's really not bad, just sit there and grin and bear it, you'll appreciate yourself for it later.

Just take some advil before you go.

The amount of pain you're going to experience depends on where the tat is going to be on your body. If they are drilling that needle into a boney spot, like your wrist, it hurts like hell and makes a sickening hollow noise. If you're getting it somewhere fleshy, then it wont hurt so bad. Like the other guy said, tattoos are meant to hurt, so expect some pain. It's a needle driving into your skin...think about it.

I got a local anesthetic for my first one, and I regret it!! A tattoo is earned, so bear the pain. Anesthetics make the skin swell, and will therefore warp your tat.
Don't be a baby - the pain really isn't as bad as you think it'll be.
