It means that all golfers in the tournament, either amateur or professional, will tee off at the same time. The field of golfers is placed through-out the course, usually with same number of golfers on each hole. Because of the size of the golf course a shotgun is fired to alert the field to tee off and begin the round. The shotgun can be heard anywhere on the golf course.

I play in many golf events in my region as well as golf competitions and benefits. The term "shotgun" refers to how an event will start. Sometimes there is a morning shotgun start or an afternoon shotgun start. This term is applied to competition golf events as well as benefit events to raise money for various charities. When hundreds of people are participating in an event, the teams, once signed in, are assigned a hole on the golf course to start playing on at a certain time. At that particular starting time, like 1pm, the golf course professional or designated person from the clubhouse goes outside and shoots a shotgun which is able to be heard from one end of the golf course to the other. This will enable all the teams positioned throughout the golf course strategically by the club pro to hopefully be able to play their outing or benefit with the least amount of waiting on each tee area or fairway.

Shotgun start means everyone starts at the same time but on a different hole. A regular tournament a group tees off every eight minutes. So a shotgun start at 1 means everyone tees off at 1pm

The term "shotgun" refers to everyone in the field teeing off at the same time. Instead of golfers all starting on the 1st or the 10th holes, each group of golfers starts off on a different hole so everyone in the tournament starts at the same time. This is traditionally used to complete the tournament quicker and normally the players will finish around the same time instead of having to wait a long period of time for the last group to come in.

Very simply put, it means all of the golfers go to their assigned holes and start at the same specified time, rather than starting at the first hole at different times. The term "shotgun start" refers to the way of letting everyone know it is time to start. At one time, a golf course might have sent everyone to their holes and then fired off a shotgun or sounded a siren to let them know it was time to begin. Now, however, most golf courses send the golfers to their assigned holes at the same time and they start playing as soon as they get to their holes.

The shotgun start means that the players start play at different holes. For example, you may start on the 12th hole while others start on the 1st.
