There are multiple reasons why people self-mutilate and each case needs to be explored individually. The most common reason is that it occurs during a dissociative state and assists people who have been traumatized with achieving a state of emotional numbness and you hear it described as soothing for them. The physiological basis for it stems from the release of endorphins-the brain's natural painkillers-which function much like opiates and dull the experience of emotional pain. Other reasons include the opposite rationale-people who feel numb emotionally and who have shut down will self-mutilate in order to feel something and remember they are alive. Others do it for self-punishment and feel relief from guilt or shame and see the letting of blood as a way to purge themselves of guilt. It may be a way of re-enacting and attempting to master early traumatic experiences. In more rare instances it can be a response to psychotic states where folks are responding to command hallucinations or believe they are purging themselves from some evil inside them. There are other less common reasons, depending on the form of self-mutilation (eye enucleation, castration, etc.) that tend to be symbolic in nature. But most commonly it is done in response to increased feelings of tension with which the individual cannot cope and it becomes a way for them dissociate their emotional pain and achieve an emotional numbing. The goal of treatment is to fully understand the reasons that sustain the behavior and in the latter case (the most common) to help people develop affect tolerance and the ability to cope with and soothe their emotional pain in healthier ways.

People have various reasons for self injuring themselves. All I can really say from my own personal experience is that it is a way of coping. Some people have so much pain but dont know how to deal with it. Or they have numbed themselves emotionally so they dont feel the pain like they should so they transfer the emotional pain into something they can feel physical pain. Some people are looking for attention and they dont care whether its negative or positive attention. Some people also self injur as a form of self punishment... they feel that they have done something so terrible but no one else knows to let them know so they feel that they must punish themselves. Some people might do it just to get a rush or a high off of hurting themselves... it can be very addicting.
In any case it is not normal or healthy for people to do this but when a person self injurs they are typically not mentally healthy to begin with and do not know healthy coping mechanisms.
I hope that answers your question.

it particularly is now not a wholesome coping means, flat out. the reality which you in basic terms, or I, or somebody else cuts or shrink is a demonstration that they did not produce different thank you to regulate with their matters. i'm now not saying it particularly is somebody's fault that they did not have those information, even nevertheless that's what the disadvantage is. it is likewise an addictive conduct that gets worse and worse; you're leaving your self (or, in case you have not yet, you will go away your self) with scars on a thank you to be with you for a life-time. it is likewise a constructive sign of alternative matters, which truthfully would desire to be taken care of. there is a great number of ladies and men who get it who "prefer ppl to surrender" on account that they're truthfully irritating; it particularly is not a sign of properly wellbeing. it is likewise the healthiest option available to a guy or woman at a very unique ingredient in time (this starts off stepping into the specifics of why different ladies and men shrink), even nevertheless it particularly is not a properly long-term plan.

The simple answer is there is no reason. It's a mental disorder. There is a variety of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in which the suffer "self-injures" and that can be self-multilating. In this case, the self-injuring is a compulsion intended to relieve anxiety of an obsession (thought) of guilt. Person is punishing themselves. Self-multilation can also be a symptom of Borderline Personality Disorder.

It happens when many build up the anger and cannot let it out. They think it is the most constructive way to let it out when it is more distructive. Most people who do that have depression and other things wrong mentaly. As well as any other problem like not getting attention and family nagging them and etc. Hope that answers it for you.
