Surprised.....no. In his position and with his past relationship with the US, he is bound to be paranoid. Now the real question is, is there any truth to his paranoia? I'd say I would like to think we live in a world were countries do not send out assassin's to kill opposing heads of state, but the reality is this does happen and will continue to happen. Is the US out to kill him, I'm sure we would harbor no love lost and would only benefit from his demise, however I would think the CIA or whatever other agency that would have involvement (if there is any), would hopefully be smart enough to channel that attempt on his life through a different country with shaky relations with the US in order to obtain plausible deniability.

So to answer this question, I'm not surprised.

Chavez has every reason to believe. The CIA had indeed attempted to carry out assasination attempts on Fidel Castro of Cuba in the past. Why wouldn't Chavez feel the same now?.

Why did Bush, Gates, Rumsfeld, Condi Rice, and Cheney always turn up unannounced during their visits to Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Israel, and Afghanistan?. Don't they also believe that enemies are out to kill them?. Of course, they believe so. That's the reason why they never announce their trips beforehand. That's also the reason for their heavy security details. Are they paranoid?. Of course they are, and there's nothing wrong about that.

If only John F. Kennedy believed that there would be assasination attempt on his life, and made the necessary precautions, he would still be alive today.

Are they paranoid?. of route they are, and there is no longer something incorrect about that. If in reality John F. Kennedy believed that there is assasination attempt on his existence, and made the mandatory precautions, he may though be alive at modern-day.

Are we supposed to be surprised that Chavez THINKS enemies are going to kill him, or that Chavez SAYS enemies are out to kill him, or that his enemies ARE out to kill him?
No one is out to kill him, other than maybe a Venezuelan or two. He is either paranoid or trying to cover up another heinous act in the name of protecting himself. Given the fact that Chavez is always saying the most outrageous things and has always said the USA has been trying to overthrow him, I would guess that he plans to kill someone and say it because he was protecting himself from CIA killers.

Most dictators like Chavez are paranoid--and with good reason. During the last years of his life, Stalin slept in a different spot in his house every night for fear one of the family members of the millions he murdered would drop by for revenge.

As for Chavez, maybe Joe Kennedy can convince him that he's safe.

Not really.

If I were a proto-dictator with plans of seizing total power in my country, and possibly ruining my country through economic and military policy, I'd expect to have enemies too.

Am I surprised that the US is trying to kill Chavez? No. You might investigate Omar Torrijos and Fidel Castro for some of the CIA's failed assassination attempts.

I'm not surprised. It's just the ravings of a paranoid schizophrenic.

Gee, why do you think that is. Maybe because he has taken Venezuela from a Constitutional Democracy to a totalitarian state.
