she is a 10 yr old rotty , and she doesn't really like all cats , just her own.we will be losing her soon to old age also and I don't want to make her jealous in her time left with us, so I don't think a new cat is appropriate now.But thanks to all who cared to answer.

I know this sounds crazy, but take some special time to talk to your dog. They understand more than we give them credit for. Your dog is probably wondering what happened to the cat and wondering if you are going to get rid of them too.

I refer to my dog as a perpetual 5 year old. If a member of the house suddenly disappeared, a 5 year old would wonder what happened and want to know where they went. They would also want to know if the same thing is going to happen to them. It is normal for a 5 year old to have these thoughts and to have upsets that might affect activities, behaviors and eating habits while they are busy worrying about the what ifs.... But if you sit them down and have a loving talk with them and let them know that you loved your cat, but he died and went to a better place, and also re-assure your dog that you love it too, but that now it is the two of you and they will be staying with you always. They can comprehend that you know they miss the cat as do you.

You might also want to do a bit of extra cleaning at your home. The dog can still smell the cat, but unable to find them can restimulate their anxioty about a member of the family dieappearing.

I have had the opportunity to work with Rescue. Your dog is feeling what many abandoned animals sometimes go through after loosing their first home. They can't understand why the people they loved got rid of them or left them behind and never came back. They want to love their new foster guardians, but tend to be bit careful, because they remember what happened to them, and worry that it could happen again. With reassurance, they come around.

Good luck.

Get another kitten or a puppy, I know that sounds crazy, but it is the best solution. You dog is grieving, and may not ever get over it. I lost my nine year old Golden to caner last year, so this is he voice if experience. I happened across some girls giving away puppies soon after LadyLou's passing, one looked like a Golden, so I took her. Buffy has been a Godsend to our other dog, she was so sad and lonely without her friend. The puppy is 11 months now, and she still looks exactly like a Golden, even though her mama is a black lab, go figure.

Always adopt, and spay or neuter, it is the right thing to do.

Take him on a long walk, he feels your pain and it could be good for both of you to find something to pass your time... and i bet you anything that if you feed him after you get back from your walk... maybe give him some yummy treats like alittle bit of canned food =) He should be better in no time... just keep his food out at all times so that when he is hungry he will start eating again... maybe even take him to a doggy park and throw the ball for him =) Good luck on you and your doggy and im sorry for your loss, losing an animal is just like losing your best friend... Be strong for you and your doggy!!

Oh boy this happen to me too. They get so attached to their buddies and when they are gone they get so very sad.
Make sure anything that is left of your cat being in your home is gone. I had to clean everything and try to dimish the sent of my older dog.
Try to get your dog outside and go for a short walk that may stimulate his appitite. If this doesn't work then a trip to the vets is in order.

Your puppy is very depressed!

I'd bet you're just as sad as he is. Just comfort him, and talk to him, saying the regular things you'd say to anybody; that you miss the cat too. It might seem stupid, but dogs understand more than we think they do. Maybe some canned dog food would help.

My heart goes out to you and your pet. It will take a week or so for doggie to get used to kitty being gone.Love your dog xtra, put beef juice on it's food(or chicken) The dog is greiving in it's own way. Needs hug's and security from you. It will not die from starvation, just need's alot of love from you. Put something of kittys in the dog's bed. May GOD bless your hearts!

I heard that pets even go through a grieving process when another pet leaves or dies. When we had to get rid of one of our dogs, the other dog seemed depressed. We just spent a lot of extra time with him. You may want to try to hand feed your dog. You can even act like your giving him treats but hold pieces of food in your hand. I think he will return to his normal self soon. I doubt he will starve himself to death. If it gets really bad, take him to the vet. They can force feed him. Good luck

Animals grieve just like people do. You're dog will hopefully start to eat again but always leave food out to encourage...even if he/she just nibbles at it. Poor baby.

Aw... poor baby. He's sad.
I don't know if it'll help, but maybe you could adopt another cat.
