I uninstalled a program, DesktopX, because it was acting weird.
whenever i ran it something about Microsoft Visual C++ popped up.
Hoping uninstalling and reinstalling would solve the problem, i uninstalled it.
It it told me I had to restart my computer.
So i clicked ok, but someother pop up came up.
It had two options 'quit' or 'don't quit' (it wasn't the "there are more than one user logged in, are you sure you want to restart your computer?")
i didn't get a good look at it and i just clicked quit.
everything restarted, however whenever I go into "My Documents" folder every document is gone and when i opened iTunes i had to reinstall it and every single song and playlist was gone.
my trash wasn't empty. when i clicked empty trash it said "are you sure you want to delete WINDOWS?"
i clicked no because i know the WINDOWS folder is important, but when i double-click or explore on the recycle bin, there is nothing there.
I restarted my computer and the WINDOWS file isn't in the recycle b

in anymore.

How do I get all my documents and music back?

I have another internal hard drive (X), but nothing has happened to hard drive X.
and I don't think anything has happened to my master drive (C).

Also,
I tried system restore to yesterday's checkpoint.

Would going a week back set it back to normal?

Wow, sounds like your whole OS is messed up. Might need to reinstall.

-EDIT, Oh wait, you might be able to get your files back. That is, if you know much about DOS. You will have to get some help from a forum setting where you and other people can carry on a conversation because here its just a ask and answer setting.

-EDIT again, DONT REFORMAT YET! Try to run some recovery software or use DOS to try and to a file recovery. If you format, it will wipe out any possibility of getting them back. Recovery doesnt have much of a chance but its still a chance.

Your computer may be having a problem with your user folder. Check in My computer, C:, documents and settings, (your user name), my documents. Your files should be in there. You can either transfer your files to the new user name "my documents" folder OR just make a shortcut on your new desktop to it.

Also, try searching C: drive (hard drive) for one of the songs you had (It may be in a different folder). -Good Luck

What a nightmare. I am so sorry this happened to you. There is just one option now, although you won't recover your missing data and files...

But before we do that, insert your OS CD in your ROM drive and perform a Windows repair. This will install the windows files. This should correct everything. If not, perform a fresh installation of windows.

Sorry to hear about your situation man.

I'd say you're screwed... The only way to fix it is to reformat the computer and install a fresh new window.

As for the data, try connecting your hard disk to an external connection and make backup of any personal files that can be found (IF found) in the hard disk.

Good Luck~

If your problem suddenly occurred, try doing a system restore to a point before this problem occurred.

If that doesn’t work.

Run "check disk" check both options and restart. (runs a long time)
http://www.microsoft.com/atwork/getstarted/speed.mspx

Start> Run> enter "sfc.exe /scannow" in the run box.
Run. You will need the windows XP disk. This utility will check all system files against the disk and repair if needed.
If you can't run, try again in safe mode.

System File Checker (sfc.exe)

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/185836
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310747

If this doesn't work, do a repair install.
Repair install. (should not lose data) Backup files first.

To run in “Safe Mode” read:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406

After you recover your data I would recommend you do a format and reinstall (all data will be lost.)

Reformat and install. (Cleans drive loses all data)
